Diamond loose after engagement ring re-sized?

KZP1021, on October 24, 2017 at 3:12 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17

I had my engagement ring re-sized at a local jeweler's last weekend. The ring is from the 1950s and belonged to my grandmother who passed away 30 years ago. It went from a size 6 to a size 4 and through some heavy duty cleaning which I'm sure hasn't been done since she wore it. I dropped off the ring Saturday afternoon and picked it up on Monday afternoon. I noticed the diamond was loose the next day because the prongs kept catching on everything, so I googled why that could be. Then I started getting nervous my diamond was switched... but I've pretty much talked myself out of it. Can you guys reassure me, or should I be concerned? I think the cut looks the same. The cleaning probably loosened up a lot of debris causing the diamond to loosen as well. The prongs seem farther apart though, especially at the bottom. Can this be due to the resizing? Image on the left is before - unfortunately the best quality pic I had.

Looks the same to me but I would go back to the jeweler and discuss your concerns with them.

Take it back to the jeweler and be sure that the prongs are tight enough! My diamonds on either side of my ring are called channel set, and when they sized my ring, the jeweler didn't tighten them enough and I lost one not even a week after I got it back- and had to find a new place to take and pay to have it replaced, so just be safe and have it checked good!

Thanks, ladies! I will certainly be taking it tomorrow (closed today) to get it sorted out. Was just wondering if anyone had any input on the diamond situation or had a similar experience! Smiley smile

I had mine resized smaller as well and about a month later the diamond was loose. The jeweler told me that it could be that I hit it against something and didn't realize it or that because it was sized smaller that it loosened the prongs. They tightened it for me no problem and I haven't had a problem with it since.

Coming from my FFIL who is a jeweler -

This may be happening because you only have four prongs on your engagement ring. Four prongs are not as secure as six prongs and the cases he has seen where women have lost their stones are all due to the prongs coming loose and he's only ever seen that happen with four prongs. The ring my FH originally bought me had four prongs and my FFIL switched the setting to have six prongs. Any jeweler can do that for you, but just be aware that it might change the look of the ring slightly.

This image is a little blurry, but it shows the difference in the prongs. On the left is my ring the day my FH proposed and it had four prongs which gave the setting more of a square shape. On the right is my ring now with the six prongs. It makes the setting look more rounded. It's definitely something I would recommend looking into if you are worried about losing your stone.

Let me guess litman jewelers? ?? Because they switched my diamond in the moorestown mall in new Jersey and they took out my 10k gold as well.

    My ring has no diamond

anymore because of them cause the fake came out.

@Alforev - thank you for the advice, that looks beautiful. I don't have a preference for square or round shape, so I will look into that.

@Emily - no, we went to a family jeweler in NE Ohio... I feel they did not switch my diamond. I'm sorry that happened to you Smiley sad

No worries @kzp and good luck!

@emily I can't believe that! What did you end up doing? There has to be someway to get your ring back to the condition it's supposed to be in. I'm a NJ girl too... I will definitely never recommend them to say the least.

Re-sizing the ring could move the prongs farther apart. Take it back have the prongs tightened.

I'd definitely take it to the jeweler and have them inspect it and ensure the prongs are tight enough.

And I love your ring!! It's so similar to mine which is vintage but not a family heirloom. Our jeweler told us it's probably from the 20s or 30s due to the cut of the stone (European) and style of the setting. I love that it's unique and not something you see everywhere.

I'm sure the diamond is fine! I have to get my promgs lm various rings constantly tightened! It just happens through normal wear and tear!

I would definitely take it to a jeweler (and perhaps even two!) to have them inspect the prongs. I have threads get caught in my prongs all the time, but I have my rings inspected every 6 months to make sure everything is OK.

When I had mine resized 2 of my small diamonds fell out. It must be something to do with the resize.

When I had mine resized, my diamond became loose as well. The jeweler was unable to fix it so I had to get an entirely new ring that was the same style (yay for protection plans.)

It does look the same based off of the pic provided, but I'd voice your concern with the jeweler, especially since it's an important piece of jeweler and memorabilia for you.

For future peace of mind about your diamond, make sure you have it appraised and mapped for markings/flaws. When you take it in and have to leave it, review the paperwork with the jeweler against the stone for protection of both parties. Beautiful and special ring, you have. I'm sure you cherish it.

I have a verragio setting that my FH ordered through a certified verragio retailer; however, the center stone is my great grandmothers from when she got engaged in 1951. I was very uncomfortable sending in that diamond to be placed in a new setting - so the jeweler mapped out the small imperfections in the diamond for me. Now I can tell if it's my diamond by having another jeweler look at the diamonds small imperfections - so no swapping here!
