Diamond is crooked in its setting!

Adrianna, on March 6, 2019 at 1:45 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6
I got engaged Christmas Eve 2018, and just last week, I noticed that my diamond is lopsided in its setting! This must have just happened because I definitely would’ve noticed it. I just don’t know how it could’ve happened. I don’t remember banging it. Loose prong? Poor setting?

My FH got my ring custom made from Israel and spent a decent amount of money on it. More than average. I told him about the ring, and although he didn't say it, I’m sure he is bummed out that there is a fault in my ring.

In the pics, you can see that the diamond is crooked. It’s not center in the basket. The straight-on pic, hard to tell, but you can see the lower right prong is not even with the others.

I’m just looking to see if this has happened to anyone. Is this fixable? Is it expensive to fix?

What was the plan moving forward for maintenance on your ring? I would go to a local jewelry store and see if they can help you. You want to have somewhere to go to get your ring cleaned, prongs and diamonds checked, etc.

Is your ring insured? Ring insurance is what I believe is usually used to cover things like this. If not, I'd take it to a jeweler and ask what they think.

I think it is fixable. Just take it to a local jeweler and get their opinion. They would probably want to re-set the diamond. I don't know how much that costs. I read online anywhere from $80 to $250.

My ring is a family heirloom (about 70yrs old) and we had to have the prongs rebuilt and stone reset because the stone was loose (Smiley surprise ) . It was awhile ago but I think it was less than $200 for a jeweler to do and took maybe a week. (this was in NY). Also for reference, my ring is platinum

It's no big deal, it's what the prongs are designed to do if they get caught or knocked on something. Go to a local jeweller and get it taken care of if there's nothing in the purchase agreement that it has to be serviced by a specific place.

The price varies depending on the store and the metal, but really this is a minor thing as long as metal doesn't need to be added to the prong (it shouldn't since it's brand new, but if it is bent from a hard knock, the prong may be flattened and have to be built up).

Don't worry, I worked at a jewelry store and this is totally normal. It's like panicking that your break pads need to be replaced.
