Details of Engagement Ring Unknown - Help!

Anonymous, on October 17, 2019 at 12:11 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 12

I got engaged last month. I recently asked my fiance how many carats the diamond is and he told me that he honestly doesn't know. He did know how many carats the white gold was, though. I find it odd that the jeweler did not tell him about the diamond weight. The stone is very small, but I know he is not purposefully keeping that info from me.

Is there any way for me to estimate? It isn't that important, but I am curious since I'll have this for the rest of my life and I want to be sure that my fiance wasn't severely overcharged. On the other hand, it did not cost him enough for us to pay to have it appraised.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

I would go to the place that he purchased it from and ask. They should have a file with all the information which would include the carat weight.

You can take your ring to any jeweler that does appraisals and they should be able to tell you. Or if you know the specific place he got it from, you could probably find it online unless it was custom made.

It was made in the 1930's, so unfortunately I won't be able to find it online.

I would take it to a jewelry appraiser and get an appraisal, that's the only way you'll be able to insure the ring (which you should also do). I think those appraisals typically cost $100-$300 and take an hour or so. I imagine he has the receipt, which most likely would have those details too?

Just it from should have given him an appraisal for insurance purposes if nothing else. I would contact them and go in and ask for it

Take it to the jeweler, they should have all that info. I unfortunately lost a stone on my ring, but luckily the place my fiancé got it has a lifetime warranty for lost stones. They told me EVERYTHING about the ring, even the things my fiancé hoped I'd never find out like how much he paid for it. Smiley tongue

A certified diamond should come with a ton of information about the cut, clarity, color, size etc etc. If your future husband doesn’t have that info you could ask the jeweler yourself. But maybe think about if that’s really something you’d want to do. Do the details matter enough that you want to risk potentially hurting your fiancé’s feelings? And even if he did pay too much, I doubt he wants to be told that. If it was me, I’d let it be, or so a completely unrelated jeweler and keep what I found out to myself.

This. Im not sure I really understand the motivation to find out if he overpaid as if he did...there’s really nothing to be done about it- all that happens is you both feel bad about it. An appraisal is important if you want to insure it. But if you don’t think it is worth insuring, I really don’t see the point .

Did he not get any paperwork with the ring? all of the information would be on the paperwork he's given at the purchase time.

you could also go back to the place he purchased and ask them. They would know. Just take him with you since it will be his name on file.

If you plan to insure the ring, you'll need an appraisal. It's also best to know everything the ring comes with (appraisal, warranty, cleaning etc) anyways so worth it to make a trip to the store together.

With that said, our jewelry store told us that generally, in our zip code, it isn't worth insuring jewelry valued at less than $3000. It's hard to know if yours is or isn't though considering how little information you have to work off of.

It's a special piece of jewelry. I'd want to know as much as possible too.

As others have suggested, take it to get appraised and they will be able to give you all the details. You'll need that info to get your ring insured anyways Smiley smile
