Destination/elopement brides!

Taylor, on April 10, 2020 at 10:59 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6
For the brides who have traveled on a plane to their wedding destination, how did you travel with your dress? Mine is fairly poofy, and Sandals is going to ship me a garment bag.

Did you have to call ahead to use a closet on the plane, or did you just ask when you boarded? I’m too paranoid to check it with luggage, and I’m not sure about putting it in an overhead bin.

We were suppose to have a destination wedding in May, which obviously isn’t happening now but I did start looking into how to travel with my dress and my friend had a destination wedding in 2018. From what we’ve both found, it totally depends on what airline you’re traveling with as some airlines have a closet where they can hang your dress and others (like Southwest) do not. We were planning to fly Southwest and after some research I learned that it’s totally up to the flight crew if they help you or not. From what I’ve heard, most flight attendants will help you if you let them know at the desk at the gate and/or upon boarding the plane that this is your wedding dress. They usually let you hold the dress until all luggage is placed in the overhead bins and then you can lay it across the luggage in the bin. If we went Southwest, I was planning to upgrade to business class or at the very least pay the extra money for early boarding.

Thank you Amber for your insight, that is really helpful. I’m sorry your destination wedding isn’t happening and I wish you the best. We are eloping but I still am worried about travel bans.. hopefully things will be better in June.

I will remember what you said- thanks again!

    Flight Attendant here!!!

Congratulations! Those dresses can be heavy to carry through the airports for sure. I know the bag is described as being able to hold everything but you'll want to keep it to just your dress and veil. I would pack shoes, accessories, etc into your carry on. Depending on the aircraft type we do have closets however, they are TINY....like super tiny even on the bigger airplanes. The flights I have been working lately are wide open as in lots and lots of seats and overhead space available. You should be able to lay your dress flat into an overhead bin, but be sure you have a fantastic garment bag over your dress to protect it, in fact, I would have my alterations company place my dress in a plastic bag first and then into the garment bag as extra protection. We are driving to our domestic destination wedding and I will be doing this myself. IF you have super nice FA's AND they have lots of SPACE you might be able to lay your dress across an empty row of seats, but once again you face other passengers being nosy or spilling so I would say the safest would be in the Overhead Bin. IT ALSO HELPS to bring treats to your crew members!! Just saying Smiley heart Smiley catface

Y'all will have a wonderful time and a beautiful wedding!! Travel safe, wash your hands and take turns carrying that dress girl.

Oh my gosh Amanda THANK YOU! I will be following all of your advice, especially the bringing in treats part! Do you think the treats should be prepackaged or should I make something? I know sometimes people are apprehensive when it comes to eating homemade goods from people that don’t know.

I love the plastic bag idea especially! I’ll make sure I call ahead as well and remind them when we get to the gate. Hopefully there will be plenty of seats available since less people are traveling as well. Thanks again for your help!!!!

You're Welcome!!! Pre-packaged are best no doubt, especially with the whole virus thing going on right now. Honestly, the little hand sanitizer's (if you can find any lol) have been a huge hit but chocolate is always appreciated also! Not saying you have to by any means, but a little appreciation can typically go a long way! My company is no longer serving alcohol in the main cabin, but if they are serving by then it might even get y'all a couple complimentary beverages! I'm sure most things will be somewhat back to normal by then as well, just keep an eye on your flights for schedule changes as well, they have been changing our schedules randomly for a few weeks now.

I appreciate that! Hand sanitizers and chocolate will be perfect! We haven’t booked yet because of the ever-changing flights. We are looking out for first class or comfort plus tickets so hopefully that’ll help too with getting to board sooner, etc. I’m always up for free drinks too! 😄 I appreciate your replies so much.
