Destination Wedding, Thinking about canceling.....

Jas, on March 26, 2020 at 4:52 PM Posted in Planning 0 12

Unfortunately, Our wedding is currently scheduled for August 2020 in Rivera Maya, Mexico. We hope that everything will be cleared up by then, but we are afraid of how their healthcare system is and how they currently aren't doing anything to remedy their situation. We don't want to have to subject our guests to a potentially unsafe situation, so we might cancel and have one locally. Anyone else struggling with this type of decision?

My wedding is in October in Riviera Maya as well. So far I’m going to stick to my date but it did cross my mind briefly. I’m not going to panic until we get a bit closer so for now I’m just waiting it out.

I totally understand! I just have some many medically compromised people going that, I would never forgive myself if something to happened to someone on the trip. I hope everything works out for you!

Best of luck to you too! For your wedding i would see if maybe you can get a backup date at the resort just in case or check with your travel agent about how rescheduling would work. If your guests don’t have travel insurance they’ll be out of their money. Some brides have been saying that the pandemic doesn’t qualify for those that do have insurance.

Yes, that’s true. They would get a refund for the money that they have paid minus the non-refundable deposit, but they would receive majority of it back. A lot of people don’t want to go at this point so it’s just dealing with the individuals that do. Yes, the new insurance that some of the travel agencies have acquired does not cover the pandemic, but the original insurance that you can purchase within 14 days of booking, does. We don’t even want to reschedule, we aren’t sure of what the conditions or healthcare systems over in Mexico will be able to handle, so unfortunately we are going to take the loss

Aww I’m so sorry to hear that but ultimately family is just as important as your big if not more! Will you reschedule at least? The bright side is that it’ll give you more time to plan and relax. Maybe you still go to the justice of the peace on your original date.

Yes, we are now planning on circling back to some local venues and seeing if we are able to schedule something around that time! And yes we have also contemplated the justice of peace on that date as well

With mexico, i can see your concern. The other day the president of mexico posted a video telling its citizens to go out and shop. When it gets bad, that's when they'll shut down. I can understand he doesn't want to frighten its citizens, but soon they'll be like us. Last time i check, they were over 585 cases. A lot of people in that country can't afford to completely shut down. I don't know, with that i would worry if i were you. I would keep an eye out to see when they finally shut down or if they are even going to. The longer they take to take this seriously, the longer it will take to see the cases drop. Just giving you the heads up.

Yes, thank you. I have already taken all of that into consideration, which is ultimately the rest we decided to cancel. We will not risk our, our children or our guests lives over this.
