Destination Wedding Question: Wedding Cake sampling

Vanessa, on March 17, 2017 at 12:13 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

Has anyone asked that a bakery mail them some samples? I want to ask one of the shops that I am negotiating with. I would even pay for the shipping.

Good idea... I dont see why they wouldn't be able to ship some samples to me if I am willing to pay for the shipping.

Just wanted to see if anyone has done this...

Happy to find other destination wedding brides! My wedding is in central Mexico (Queretaro), and all providers speak no English so I have been putting my spanish to work!

I cant say enough how important it is to go yourself for a weekend or even a week to meet with your providers before the wedding. I have the menu tasting, cake tasting, hair and makeup trial, florist sample all scheduled the same 4 days I'll be there. I was trying to avoid going to save airfare, but it is SO hard to develop your vision for things over email and skype/phone!

If you have a friend there, you could also tell them to go taste for you and report back.

Interesting. I never thought about that. Although I would never ask the baker to mail anything from Shanghai, China...snail mail would never make it to me before the wedding.

We are flying out a week in half before our wedding, so we are planning to do a cake sample then. Our baker told us we need to order minimum 2 days before we need the cake. April is a slow month there, if you are familiar with their lucky and unlucky numbers you would understand why.

I had a destination wedding in Australia and booked/paid for my cake without a testing. We did do a tasting on the day we arrived in the country to figure out what flavors we wanted. It just wasn't feasible for us to take a trip there to look for vendors.

Where are you located and where is the wedding? I don't think the shipped cake would be a clear representation of what you are getting? Especially, if it has to go through customs.

Wedding is in PR and I'm in Jersey. Not flying there until 3 days before the wedding. People ship food all the time, so I figured why not cake samples

I plan to fly down for that (NY to Florida) but I like your option of having it overnighted to you.

We are doing a dw tomorrow. We did do a cake tasting. (Our wedding is in Florida and we are from Wisconsin). Oiler caje lady froze the samples and we thawed them out. Fresh is better and it was good but not great. I know ours will be great cause they aren't frozen if that makes sense. If they ship it to you they might freeze it and it will taste different.

Doing a destination wedding, we knew we'd be flying down to Costa Rica at least twice. 1st to check out venues, 2nd to do food and cake taste testing. If you can swing it and they can't ship, I strongly advise taking the trip. Luckily we really couldn't go wrong with the cake as everything was good. But boy that food tasting was necessary.
