Destination wedding: preserving your bouquet and cake?

Stephanie, on September 30, 2019 at 1:16 PM Posted in Planning 2 7
Anyone try to attempt to save their bouquet and their cake on a destination wedding? Like how do you even go about that to make sure the 1) the flowers stay fresh and 2) the cake stays cool and intact on a longer (about 6 hour) flight?

I would bring both as a carry on in like a open bag. Wrap the stems of the flowers in damp paper towels and put the bottom in a plastic bag or foil then put them under your seat. For the cake it should be OK in a Tupperware container but it really depends on how big it is if you can find one to fit it.

To really make sure nothing goes awry, I'd contact your florist and baker. They'll probably have some tips and tricks to make sure everything stays in-tact!

Eat the cake and enjoy the flowers while you can. My flowers were pretty wilted by the time we flew home- 4 days later. Honestly, ask your baker and florist but ask yourself if it’s worth the hassle.

We ate the top tier in the few days after the wedding. We had enough stuff to haul home in the car for 13 hours that a cooler wasnt going to fit. Plus....year old frozen cake just didnt sound appealing!

I'm not worried about it. If we bring them home great.. but, we will probably have enough stuff to fly home home with.

If you are flying international, or even from Hawaii, you might have a problem bringing a bouquet back. Plants usually have to be cleared by agricultural inspections when they arrive from an international destination, and sometimes can get confiscated.
Check with your airline or check the USDA site.

Just a thought, but perhaps you can order an flower arrangement inspired by your bouquet on your first anniversary. And preserve a few flowers from that? I think if you were going to try with the cake, I’d freeze that puppy right after the wedding so it’s stay cool a bit longer on the plane. Then when you get home do the 10 layers of aluminum foil and cling wrap and put it back in the freezer. Planes can get very hot, I’ve travelled with cookies and they melted and crumbled on an overheated plane. 😫
