Destination Wedding-engagement Party/celebration at Home?

We are getting married on Maui in October, but want to have something here in California for local friends and co-workers. When do we do that? Like a month before? Not sure of the etiquette here as far as the timeline goes. Thanks for any advice to anyone who has done this before.
