Destination Wedding-cake Tasting/baker Selection

Kaitlin, on March 22, 2020 at 4:42 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

Hey all! I am having a semi-destination wedding, 10/10/2020 and I’m at the point where I need to find my baker. We are getting married a state over, 8 hrs away from where we live.

I wanted to go and do tastings but then corona virus hit, so we canceled those travel plans.

Now I’m worried that by the time I can get down there, I’ll be cutting it close and places will book up (there’s only a few in the area)

There’s one I’ve been leaning toward that I have been following on Instagram for a few months, and they have beautiful cakes/cupcakes and high reviews on google and yelp. (No bad reviews)

Basically I don’t know when I can make that trip anymore with all the quarantines/work/life, so I’m debating just booking without a tasting and based on reviews and looks alone.

Is this crazy? Somebody reassure me or something😂

Hey date twin 😊 given our situation, I'd continue keeping in mind that you might be cutting it close for travel so reviews and photos with a quick tasting will be your bff. I'm trying to look at this like when we pick a new restaurant via Yelping lol pictures and reviews can't be all bad right now. Have a solid back up option at least 2 I'd say and then when it's tasting time, you'll be ready to rock!

Hey there! I own a bakery and we will ship out tasting packs and a lot of other bakeries will do this as well. Your bakery might be wiling to mail you a tasting pack of cakes and frostings. Why don’t you call them and see if they can do that for you!?! Good luck I hope they can!!

I actually don’t think it’s bad if you don’t do a tasting. I did a tasting and my cake didn’t come out the same as when I tasted it aha. Not saying that’s gonna happen to you - but that even with a tasting it’s not a super guarantee

Hello. I’m in the same predicament as Kaitlyn, except I’m in Florida and my wedding will be in New Orleans. Which shipping service does your bakery use to send tasting packs? Do you ship the cakes iced or do you pack the icing separately? The bakeries I’ve spoken to and requested a tasting pack via mail are always hesitant because of bad experiences they have had in the past with shipping tasting packs. I’m trying to find a way to get this done given the circumstances. Thanks so much!

Hey there, I use USPS 2 day shipping and put dry ice packs in all of my boxes. Quite honestly the amount of sugar that is in frostings they are good for up to 5 days with out a fridge. I ship cake slices filled and not filled depends on the tasting the couple selects. Regardless, I freeze everything first. I wish I could help ya'll out with your cakes and tastings, but I am in the Northern VA (DC) area. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Janelle - I wish you could too, but this information has been more than helpful. I’ll be able to offer this as a suggestion to have a tasting pack mailed to me. Thanks so much!

Thank you, that’s so helpful! I’ll have to ask if they would be willing to do that. ☺️
And crazy, my parents are in VA, about 2 hours or so south of DC! Hope you and your business are still doing okay with all this craziness!

I actually modified my wedding to Plan B COVID wedding in Florida (my home state) but before I did so, I had secured Mad Batter Bakery in Chalmette (right outside of NOLA) - madbatterbakery.net. They sent me and my then fiancé tasting samples via mail — and they sent 2 packs because I was in Florida and he was in Texas at the time. Anne, the owner, worked with us to arrange the mailed tasting. It was awesome!! Reach out to her and tell her Sharonda sent you. Their flavors were so awesome! Good luck!!

You’re very welcome! You can’t go wrong with them — service and price wise. Although I ultimately did not get married in NOLA, I still have a lot of information that may be useful for those planning in NOLA (especially during the pandemic), so if I can help, just let me know. Blessings to you during the planning process!
