Desserts for those with Dietary Restrictions

Jennifer, on September 16, 2022 at 12:40 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 36
I have 6 guests with dietary restrictions: 2x Gluten Free, 1x Gluten Free and Dairy Free, 2x Nut Allergies, and 1x Vegan. Would you feel “short changed” if you got fruits as dessert because of your dietary restriction? I can’t seem to find a dessert that would satisfy all of these without me getting like 3 different kind of desserts just for these guests. I honestly just don’t have the energy to research the individualized desserts and reaching out to different bakers around town.

Maybe like strawberry (gluten-free) shortcake but using a strawberry sorbet instead. If people assemble these, they can include what they like. I'm sure some other desserts could offer such flexibility.

Check for some gluten-free dairy-free wedding desserts. Some gluten-free dairy-free desserts are listed here:

Maybe a bakery will show up with some of the dessert types.

Oreos are vegan, and meet most of the criteria. That and fruit and I'd be happy.

There are many gluten free and vegan desserts out there and plenty of those are nut free too.

Dietary restrictions are not a choice and honestly I would be very offended if I gone out of my way to attend a friends wedding (which can often be a costly event for guests with travel and hotels!) and they hadn't bothered to cater for me.

You can always buy ready made desserts if you're struggling to find appropriate catering but honestly gluten free and vegan w/o nuts is not that difficult Smiley smile

Can you ask the vendor making your cake what they can do to accommodate the restrictions? Maybe they can make cupcakes for thoses guests instead? A cupcake with fruit on the side is essentially the same thing as a slice of cake. I've been to many weddings as a vegetarian and have been sorely disappointed at most. It's almost to the point where I'm going to start declining invites. My thought process is: Of course I want to celebrate with you and witness your wedding vows. But I also still want to eat and not feel starved or feel like I'm an afterthought in the process. I can tell you from experience that it's not a great feeling. Would I be offended with just fruit for dessert? Probably not. But I would absolutely feel like I didn't matter enough for the couple to ask their caterers some extra questions in order to make sure everyone is properly hosted.

We will have fruit on our dessert table. I wanted this without even thinking about gluten free. I'm lactose intolerant and can't have most desserts. I wouldn't be offended if there wasn't a dessert I could eat though as long as there was food I could eat (like the meal). That said, you could get cupcakes that meet all of these criteria. I'd search for gluten free bakeries because the sensitizer can't be washed away, you need dedicated equipment.

I think in prior posts you've extended dietary consideration with their entrees. For dessert, sorbet and fruit are fine. Some may even prefer this over cake or pastries.

The last post was for the Welcome Party, but yes, I did. The Reception caterers has a perfect dinner entree that covers all that so I’m covered there. SORBET! Yes! That’s better than a regular bowl of fruit. There’s a really nice homemade sorbet shop in town that I think would be perfect. Sorbet should be vegan, gluten free, dairy free, and nut free, right?

I’ve gotten fruit before as a sub due to my nut allergy. It’s certainly not exciting, lol, but it is a dessert so it checks the “well hosted” box. Frankly with my allergy I presume I can’t eat any dessert ever , so it’s nice when something I know I can have shows up

Then any suggestions that’s not just fruit? That’s all I could think of until someone mentioned sorbet. As someone who doesn’t have any dietary restrictions and loves dessert, I don’t think think about getting Gluten Free, Vegan, Dairy Free, AND Nut Free option. Any single dessert that satisfies all 4 of these restrictions at the same time that’s not just fruit and sorbet?

I did ask them and I got “Let me think about it”. I was hoping for them to say, “Yes, here are the options you can do and we can give this dessert to this person, and this dessert to these persons, etc.” but it turns out I’m doing the thinking for them and I really don’t have the mental capacity for this. I still work full time, I’m behind on escort cards and seating charts, and dessert is the last thing I want to think about.

I tried Smiley sad The baker we are working with makes all her cupcakes with nuts so they’re nut based. She does have Gluten Free cupcakes, but they’re not vegan or dairy free. I contacted our Caterer to see if they had options and all I got was “Hmmm fruit? Let me think about this.” so I’m doing their thinking for them 🤦‍♀️ Well, you guys are. I think the suggestion for Sorbet and Fruit was a good one! There’s a place in town that brings in small batch sorbet that’s really good so now I just need to ask the caterers if I can bring in some sorbet for those with dietary restrictions.

Small batch sorbet sounds like a great idea! Sorry you had so much difficulty with this. It looks like you have it figured out though.

I did not know this! And I find this super amazing. Now, I know what to have for my Welcome Party dessert, too. I had a Gluten Free and Nut Free option, but not Vegan and Dairy Free.

Sure thing. There are many recipes out there and whilst I appreciate you will not want to make these yourself I'm sure they would give inspiration for discussions with caterers.

I am gluten free and my brother is vegan. I have made things that suit us both that don't have nuts in. This has included cakes, eton mess (vegan meringue can be made from aquafaba), 'cheese'cake, cookie pie (serve with vegan ice cream) etc.

A popular recipe source is Becky Excell who has a huge number of allergen friendly recipes including many vegan/gf (and then just look out for the nuts!).

    Her website is here: https://glutenfreecuppatea.co.uk/

I just asked the caterers and they said I could only pick off desserts from their menu or bring something in. Like, they won't make a specially made dessert just for 6 people. These are great options if I was making dessert for a small party though! For something that I could just "pick up and go" with since I will also not be making dessert the day before my wedding lol, is sorbet the best option? There's a place that sells small batch sorbets in two flavors: strawberry pineapple and blueberry lemonade and I was thinking of just doing that and garnishing with either strawberries or blueberries. Or is that still "too basic"?

Desserts for those with Dietary Restrictions 1

This is what's available on their catering menu. Do you think any of these would satisfy the GF, Vegan, and Nut Free?

Omg... I'm kind of annoyed with my caterers. Since it's a plated dinner, they charge $5 for every choice meal we gave our guests to pick. We had a beef, chicken, and vegetarian. But, to satisfy the vegan and gluten free restrictions, they need to have an entree that's not one of those 3. I was under the impression that they will accommodate guest dietary restrictions without an additional fee, but now we have to pay an additional 90 x $5 = $450 just so 4 of our guests can eat....

Boom! Problem solved. Yes Oreos have no animal products at all, and only chance of cross contamination with milk.

That sucks, but yeah, I've seen that before. A vegetarian chili or curry with rice would feed all of those people with their restrictions.
