Dessert woes

Delisa, on February 19, 2020 at 10:32 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 22
Help! So I completely underestimated the cost of a cake/dessert bar for the guests in our budget. I was so caught up with everything else. Now I’m trying to find the most cost efficient dessert to serve at the reception for 150 guests. It was suggested to have personalized Hershey bars that could double as favors, but I don’t know. Signed, frustrated Bride

Have you looked into local grocery stores? I’ve heard of a lot of people on here having luck with that and finding really gorgeous and delicious cakes! You can do a small 2 tier cake and have sheet cake to cut up for everyone.

I agree with Sara! We are getting our cakes (enough to feed 190) for $175 at HyVee! This includes filling 🤤

    Hi Sara,

I looked at 2 stores, but they don’t deliver. My fiancé and I couldn’t think of someone to pick up and drop off the cake to the reception site. (Wedding begins at 4, reception site won’t accept any deliveries until 4). I thought about begging the reception site manager to allow drop off at 3:30 if possible lol

Costco and Sams both have great cake. Half of a sheet cake which is two layers with the most delicious filling is around $20. I’m doing that plus their other cakes at Costco. I can bring my own dessert. Even cookies if there’s kids are great. Brownies, cupcakes, etc. they don’t have to be super fancy or decorated as wedding. When you attach the word wedding it seems prices double.

I'm making my own cupcakes. 120 of them (2 for each guest because I love sugar and I want to make sure there are enough) will cost me around $100 for the ingredients, and the time to make them the day before (not a big deal, I love to bake)

I agree with looking at grocery stores. I saw a sign at Publix the other day displaying wedding cakes they make so I’m assuming they do them, just not sure how much they run. Publix cakes are so yummy though and no one would ever guess it wasn’t from an actual bakery!

I think buying a bunch of store bought desserts would work! Like even just packaged cookies but putting me out on a platter would be nice

I believe Publix wedding cakes start at around $160 for a 2 tier cake & we may end up doing only 1 tier but assorted desserts (cookies, brownies, etc) because not everyone likes cake!

I would do a small one-tier pretty cake for the cutting ceremony and serve sheet cake. 👍

Sams club has really pretty cakes and cupcakes that actually taste really good. I’m not sure if they deliver but they do have drive up/pickups at most locations. Best of luck!

I love that idea! And I craft on the side so I could get display stands really cheap. Thank you!

These are all great ideas ladies! Thank you!

I’ll be looking at Costco or BJ’s for the guests. We don’t have Publix or HyVee here....wish we did...😋

I agree. Considering all things (cost, cleanup, variety) this looks like it will be the best choice. Thank you!

Yeah I had dessert woes too because the cost of a wedding cake was absurd so my friends suggested buying regular cookies and laying them out

Cake is my favorite food but I want a dessert bar! Also for 150 ppl I'm doing assorted petit fours, mini cheesecakes (buying both in bulk and ready to serve from a online company found online) and the venue includes cookies and brownies with the buffet. My aunt will be making 200 cupcakes.

If it is a spring or summer wedding, an ice cream sundae bar. You can get big tubs of ice cream and topping and let people go nuts for pretty cheap.

I found a local baker through Facebook that was a chef but is now a stay at home mom. She does cakes on the side. Because it's a side business, she charges much less. We're paying $350 for a top tier cake (for us to cut) and 17 dozen cupcakes. I'd definitely see what you can find locally. Avoid looking for someone that is specifically a "wedding" baker as they will be more pricey! What area are you getting married in?
