Dessert - vendor or Diy?

Serena, on May 3, 2022 at 10:54 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 14
Originally wanted to get a micro cake made and have a dessert bar for 100 guests. But it is so expensive! $45 for a dozen cupcakes. The micro cake is quoted at $180 for 20-26 servings. I could purchase a custom cake from our local PCC (high quality market) for $60 and get cupcakes/cookies/etc for way cheaper. The store bought tastes really good IMO!

Or should I combine store bought cupcakes with a DIY strawberry shortcake bar?
Trying to keep the work down to a minimum. Is it worth paying $600-800 for a vendor dessert bar?

We’re doing a mix of both. Donuts and cupcakes from a vendor for guests mixed with other store bought desserts. And a small cake from a vendor for myself and my fiancé to cut for pictures

I would just do the more economic thing if you have a way of getting all that food to the venue and getting it set up. I know for our venue, all food needs to be handled by our approved caterer and there's very specific delivery times during the day. I would see if you can't get somebody you trust to take this task on so you don't need to be worried about this on your day. 🙏

Double check with the venue because many have requirements for you to only serve food and beverages from licensed caterers and bakers.

Yes, this. Many venues don't allow outside catering or self-made food.

We ordered a 3 tier cake from a vendor and to keep prices down we will be buying cookies and brownies from BJ’s ! They are yummy and much cheaper then a bakery ( also approved by our venue) I would double check with your venue to make sure you are allowed to bring outside food 🤗

For sure check with your venue first, but if it's fine with them I'd say go with the more cost-effective choice. Then either drop it all off the night before or designate someone to take it over the day of. I think as long as there's something for dessert and it doesn't taste bad then your guests will be fine.

The bonus to having a vendor do the dessert is that they are in charge of getting everything ready and to the venue. If you are trying to keep the work to a minimum, consider how much of this stress you are prepared to take on and what it is financially worth to you.

If store-bought cupcakes and a DIY strawberry shortcake bar is easy (and you have the help to pull it off) then go for it. If all of the stress is going to fall on you (the bride) then make sure you have the time and bandwidth to commit to this on the day before and day of your wedding.

Yes! This is my venue! Abs for me the cost is cool because the baker sets up the entire table and has signage and cake stands and cute decor.

    Signage? What doesn't that mean?

    You're not the OP, right?

They probably mean sinage to label the desserts (possibly to disclose allergens as well). OP is Serena who posted just before you did.

Serena- I am glad you have it figured out and it sounds like you are getting what you want. Venues that are flexible and allow outside resources can save you a lot of money, too!

Exactly what the word signage means. I thought it would be self explanatory 🤷🏽‍♀️
