Dessert table

Heather, on August 28, 2018 at 9:17 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 10
So my FH and I don't want to have a cake but would rather have a dessert bar with cupcakes, cookies, brownies, and mini pies. My problem is I have no idea how to estimate how much of each we will need. We're also having Smores because out venue has 2 fire pits..however it is December so I know not everyone will go out. I also know some people won't eat dessert at all but others will grab several or at least one of each. We're having about 150 guests. Do I just get 150 assorted treats? Double? More of one than another? I have no idea. Has anyone done this before? What was your strategy?

A total of 150 assorted treats wouldn't be nearly enough. At a guess, you probably need at least 100 of each dessert. You can always get some boxes or bags so guests can take any desserts left home with them.

We are doing a cookie table and cake for 160 people. We estimated 3 cookies per person assuming they will also have a slice of cake. We have clear bags to put out for people to take the cookies home. This was at the discretion of our baker. She suggested not everyone will have cake and not everyone will have cookies but offering a way to take the dessert home gives less of a chance for leftovers because people will want it for later.

So for 150 my baker recommended:

100 Mini Whoopie Pies (2 flavors)

    100 Cake Pops

    100 Macaroons (2 flavors)

    60 Cannolis

    80 Chocolate Chip Cookies

We ended up with only 135 but I'm keeping the dessert count the same. I think a lot of it will get eaten. If not, the baker is going to bring little boxes for guests to bring things home.

This looks about right. We are doing a dessert bar also with bags for guests to take stuff home if they want.

For mini desserts, I was told to plan on 2.5 per person and for full-size, 1.5 per person. So I'd plan on closer to 175 assorted treats if they are full size.

    80 Assorted Brownies

    75 Mini Donuts

Hey Heather! The S'mores pit sounds awesome, hopefully some guests will take advantage of that! As for the desserts, I would agree with the above comments in planning for about 2-3 for each guest! If you are going to a baker for the desserts, I would ask them how to distribute those numbers across the board for the different desserts! Sounds like it's going to be so yummy!

Wow, this seems like so much. We had 3 dessert shots per guest (so 150 total and we had at least 30-40 leftover) and one cake that fed about 1/3 of guests which did all get eaten but not until late. I would think 2 desserts per person would be fine, spread across your dessert options. A small handful of guests may take more but another handful might not have any. Wait, if a lot of kids then maybe get 250-300 desserts.

Always seems to be a lot of leftover dessert. Wish other brides could report on their dessert table leftovers..

There will only be 3 small children and 2 teenagers. The rest are adults. Smiley smile

Have you discussed with a baker how many of each dessert they think you would need to have? They've probably done an event like a wedding before, so they might have a better idea of how many to expect. Smiley smile
