Dessert table & a cake for cutting ceremony only?

Amy, on November 16, 2017 at 6:30 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

Hi all! So my FH and I are definitely thinking a dessert table/buffet but wanted to get a small decorative cake for the cutting ceremony. We want to avoid the cake-cutting fee from the venue and also not everyone that will be there is into cake (including FH) so we like the idea of having options. Question is - what do we do with the rest of the cake?? Is it weird to have it up there on display but not served? We'd have cupcakes, cookies, rice krispy treats, et cetera, but is it strange to just have the pretty cake up there with guests not able to take any, then we just take it home with us? (which I wouldn't mind, since I do happen to love cake). Any way, anyone know how this normally works? Thanks!

You box it to take home for you and FH

I think you have to cut the cake and people can serve themselves a slice until it is gone... alternatively, you can "cut it" and ask the venue to take it back and box it for you, discretely.

Have it taken to the kitchen after cutting for boxing so you can take it home with you.

We have the same plan. It will be boxed up and we will take it home for the following day.

Thanks everyone! I definitely want it on display beforehand but then it just occurred to me how weird it might be to have a cake with one slice missing still hanging out on the table with the rest of desserts, that makes total sense to have it discretely removed to the kitchen.

Sorry but if you show me cake, then cut cake, I want cake! It's kind of a bait and switch to show it and then not serve it. What if the bakery made you guys an extra large cupcake to cut and then you can serve smaller ones?

It's not unheard of to have a small 'cutting' cake & then cupcakes (which it sounds like you will also be having with your dessert table). I think you are fine to have it boxed up after the slice is cut.

Yes exactly, we'll for sure have cupcakes (among the other options) for those that want cake. Thank you!

We are planning a dessert table with a wedding cake for the cutting tradition. The dessert table is to have mini bundt cakes and cookies, and the caterer will serve the cake along with those. We are including bakery bags for guests to take home whatever they want.

I'm planning on small cakes in mason jars. (Make a sheet cake and cookie cutter circles out, put them in with icing in the middle and on top )
