Dessert reception planning

Bethany , on July 7, 2018 at 9:35 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 15
Hi all — in order to save costs, my fiancé and I decided on a casual coffee and dessert reception. My question is this: do we still use the rule of ten bites per person, or should that be adjusted? We’re not doing traditional catering, just ordering from a local bakery, and I want to make sure we have enough but not necessarily go overboard either.

How fun! I don't believe I have ever attended a dessert only reception for a wedding before! I do not imagine that you would require nearly so much volume of food as for a traditional meal or hors d'oeuvres, but I do encourage you to make the language explicitly clear on your invitation that you will only serve dessert and coffee at the reception so your guests may plan accordingly. Happy planning!

It would depend on what types of dessert you plan on serving.

This is great advice. Plan the reception for the middle of the afternoon and keep it short or late in the evening so guests won't expect a meal.

Thanks for the feedback so far! We’ve scheduled the reception to begin at 2:30 pm and have included the details on our invitations. Our cake is chocolate with strawberry filling. The desserts will include lemon bars, mini cannoli, brownies, cream puffs, cream horns, mini eclairs, rice Krispy treats, a variety of cookies, donut holes, mini pies, and pudding cups.

Sounds delicious! We are doing this for our welcome reception the night before our wedding for 75 guests from 8pm - 10pm with savory bites like a warm pretzel and nacho station. We have similiar dessert selections as well as fruit trays, so consider fruit too!

That all sounds so good! I dont think you need 10 bites per person when it comes to dessert. Most people wont indulge that much into sweets. If it were me I would prob try the cake and maybe one other dessert. I would love to have options, I just wouldnt try them all! Best of luck, this sounds like a fun idea!

I think this is a great idea! I’d plan for a little more since that is all they are going to eat!

I think this is such a cute idea and sounds like a wide variety of sweets for your guests. Personally, I would order a little extra. I know I over indulge in sweets and guests won't be disappointed if they get to take some home! Hope this helps 😊

I love your dessert reception idea! You can always have little favor boxes available for guests to take sweets home if you go a little overboard. I would also add a tray or two of fruit as well.

We're doing something similar. We'll have a few less desserts than you, but will have fruit and veggie trays and maybe a cheese tray. We're also going to start the reception at the same time as you. I think between the time of day and putting something on the invitation about it being a dessert reception, people should get the message.

Oh, and we'll have little to go boxes for people to take leftovers with them. We're leaving the next day for our honeymoon and the stuff would just get trashed otherwise.

2:30 is the perfect time for this. Definitely not 10 bites per person!

Any chance you can swap a bit of sweet for savory? Some people aren’t into sugar or can’t eat it but would like to enjoy your reception time with you. What about mini cheese tartlets? Or mini potato cakes with creme fraiche?

Keep in mind a dessert reception will be 2 hrs max. Figure on maybe 5 bites at most per person.
