  Why not do both, A cake for you two to cut and then cupcakes and avoid the cake cutting fee.

  If I had to do it again I would do a small cake for cutting and then cupcakes in different flavors for everyone else.

  I've always found cupcakes to be pretty informal at weddings. They just remind me of birthday parties. A lot of people do them, though

  We are doing Nothing Bundt Cakes - packaged and then doing a smaller cake for us to cut.

  We are doing a small two tier cake for us and cake cutting and a couple of sheet cakes for our guests. So you could do both if its in the budget.
