Deposit back

Hi all, my fiancé and I have made the decision to postpone the wedding till next summer. With that being said we’ll have to wait till November to pick a new date. My fiancé one gets one week off a year. The wedding venue said we can use the deposit for a date one year from 7/26/20. I’d like to get my full deposit back from the venue with the uncertainty of next summer for the date. Since the wedding date falls after the state reopening of 5/29/20 we cannot get the deposit back. The venue is a hotel FYI.

Any help on getting the deposit back?!

My venue won’t let me even pick a new date within the year until 8 weeks out from my wedding (wedding date is August 15th) without keeping 70% of what I’ve put down. We’re in NJ, one of the most affected states. We’re going to see what they have available at that point, but we have had a lawyer prepare a letter in case things don’t work out. Not sure how it will play out as these are “unprecedented times” and some contracts consider this an “act of god” 🙄

I'm not sure what state you are from but here in CT the attorney general is urging businesses to work with couples to give their deposits back if they cannot accommodate them. If the business does not work with you the AG is willing to help

Hi Nonnie! It all depends on what your original contract states. There's almost always a non-refundable deposit of some amount, because when you book the vendor they are reserving your date and have to turn away all other business opportunities for that date.

I'd also ask what the difference would be financially between cancelling now vs using your existing deposit for a future date!
