Delayed Refund?

Sarah, on September 15, 2020 at 8:00 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

Question:

Is this normal? My caterer just agreed to the cancellation/refund of my 50% payment but said they won’t process it until December 🤔.
They’ve been super nice about everything so far so I don’t want to think anything “shady” about it but just curious if others have experienced anything similar? Apparently they don’t process refunds until 6 months prior to a wedding...
I’m okay with waiting if it is a legit reason, it just seems odd to me and my friend is telling me to demand the money now... but I hate confrontation ☹️

I’ve not heard of that, but maybe it’s post covid and conserving cash. As long as you have everything written, I wouldn’t worry too much

That’s what I was thinking you, if they have multiple refund demands at once it could put them out of business. Maybe their hoping to fill your date before they refund your deposit. As long as it’s in writing, you should be fine.

Yeah I’ve never heard of it either. My friend mentioned how maybe they will go bankrupt and I should push for the money now, but I’ll just hope that is not the case🤞🏻

Yeah I definitely understand they are struggling too. Does an email count as writing 😂🤷🏻‍♀️ Or am I supposed to like ask for an official cancellation agreement? I’m new to this wedding cancelling thing lol

We canceled our Thailand honeymoon and Delta agreed to refund our money but they said it would take 30 business days and it actually did! And we’re talking about a multi-billion dollar company. I agree with the others, I would wait as long as it is in writing.

As long as you have that in writing, I would wait until December. If they don't refund by then, then I would request a refund ASAP.

Whoa, if Delta’s doing it then it must really be a thing that happens! Ok, thanks, I feel much better about it now. Also, sorry about your honeymoon..

Yeah, that’s what I’m going to do. If I don’t hear by then I’ll start the demanding.

I have not heard of that but I would definitely suggest you get that in writing in case this goes south. Like get the exact date and amount they plan on refunding you.

Due to how many cancellations are happening with COVID, where I am from it is not uncommon for refunds to take quite some time to be processed.

We just cancelled our honeymoon for December 2020 (as we postponed to December 2021) and we have been told we won't get our refund for 12-16 weeks.

Put it in writing and follow up if you don't hear back come December.

They may well be due some funds due to covid business programs, but be in need of meeting payroll til then. And may be hoping that winter will bring hopeful people putting money down on next year. And if you pushed it, legally, they would likely be given 90 days to repay you. Which would be ... December.

Just make sure you have it in writing that they will refund you in December. Does your contract say that refunds are made 6-months prior?

I think during this time is normal. I'm waiting for a refund (something car related) and they told me that it would take at least 6-8 weeks. I honestly think some business are struggling and also overwhelmed. I would give it until December

I think an e-mail is sufficient. Sorry you had to cancel!
