Decor: Buying vs Renting

Dani, on January 10, 2017 at 11:09 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 6

I've been looking at several places to get all the decor for my reception (including candelabras, linens, chair covers/sashes twinkle lights) and I'm trying to decide what's worth buying and what I should just rent. There's places online to buy nice tablecloths and covers in bulk for relatively cheap. The candles and candelabras can also be purchased in bulk. But I know it would be initially cheaper to just rent all of these items. My concerns with renting are the hassle of having to return everything, and any possibility of if anything gets damaged or lost. Very unlikely, I'm sure. But also, if I buy everything, there's resale potential. So even though it would cost more up front, it would be likely that I can make some money back and it would "cost" less in the long run. What have you done, and what would you recommend? Side note, yes my venue offers linens, but they only have white, and we do not want white, so we're fine paying the additional cost for different colors.

Add on question: Are silk/satin type tablecloths a bad idea as far as sliding around goes? Or is there an easy adhesive to get them to stay put?

I was going to buy everything and then sell it. I was following some posts for sellers on Craigslist and OfferUp to see how long it took them to sell, and no exaggeration, all three posters are still up many weeks later. I think it's very difficult to sell everything later.

Anyway, I'm renting after all and it is going to be more cost effective.

I think people over-estimate how easy it is to resell things. Buying linens may seem cheap, but you are then responsible for steaming them, which seems like a pain in the ass. If you're renting from a company, they should do setup and tear down, no need to return later.

The other thing to keep in mind if you're thinking of buying is do you have room in your home for all the stuff you think you're going to buy?

I was kind of worried about how long it would take to re sell stuff also, so I'm glad you mentioned that. I might do a mix of both...like rent linens and buy candles and such.

I still have a bunch of wedding stuff laying around & my wedding was in July! No one wants to buy it & I have no place for it. I'm going to end up donating it all. Therefore, I really think renting is the best option.

Ooh I didn't think about steaming anything. Although my bridal suite has a dress steamer, I don't know that I want to try to deal with that.. but cost for set up/tear down is something I was trying to avoid. There most likely won't be a wedding the day before mine, plus the ceremony isn't until 5:30 or 6, so we have the morning to decorate. AND the venue provides help to decorate, so it's not all on us.
