Deceased Father-poem thoughts?

Mb2Md, on September 29, 2016 at 11:33 AM Posted in Planning 0 18

Sorry to have a depressing post. Unfortunately my father passed away fairly suddenly of cancer this July....6 months before my wedding. It was been VERY difficult and my family is devastated. Originally, I was going to have us all dance to my parents wedding song, but I think it would be too difficult for us to have the spotlight on us sobbing for 3 whole mins. So, instead I plan on doing a memorial table, as many do, just for him. I was thinking of having a candle constantly burning, flowers, pictures and I wanted to frame a poem. Does this poem sound ok? Any revisions/suggestions? I wanted it to rhyme to keep it light (if that makes sense) but I also dont want it to sound like an 8 year old wrote it lol Thank you for the help. (poem in comments)...

    Although we cannot see you,

we know you are watching as we say I DO.

You are with the bride as she gets dressed,

to have a Dad like you, she was truly blessed.

You are with the groom as he waits at the altar,

as your love for us has never faltered.

You are with us as we start our first dance,

and as we exchange each loving glance.

You are with the guests as we eat and drink,

as we could never forget our missing link.

We will take you with us wherever we go,

tonight and through all the highs and the lows.

You will be the light that guides us through life,

And as we enter the world as husband and wife.

You will stay forever in our hearts and in our minds

Because our love for you is for all of time. eta- can't spell

That's a beautiful poem. My father passed several years ago, I put his tie in my bouquet and my son wore another of his ties...

Ok, so you have me in tears. Thanks for that.

But really, that is lovely and shows that you know he is there with you in every moment of this special day.

Otherwise, it's beautiful, and not childish at all. It's very heartfelt.

I'm so sorry for your loss. My dad passed away last summer quickly from cancer as well. It was really difficult not having him there for all the excitement and planning, and especially for the wedding. My thoughts are with you and your family. *Hugs.*

I'm so sorry for your loss, I would be devastated as well. If I were you I wouln't let anyone walk me down the isle because I know my father would be there by my side walking me down the isle. I love the poem by the way!

I like the poem. It doesn't sound childish, and it's not too depressing. It's enough to pull on you and your family's heartstrings, but it has a healing, uplifting tone to it.

I lost my dad 15 years ago to cancer. I used to write poetry a lot, also. I always tried to keep my poems a little uplifting, too, when I would share them with others. ETA: I'm so sorry for your loss.

That's a beautiful poem! I might change it to "with the guests as THEY eat and drink" because the "we" throughout the rest of the poem seems to be just you and FH.

That's fairly nitpicky thing though and probably a stylistic preference!

I'm so sorry for your loss, especially so close to your wedding. Your poem is beautiful and I think it's a great way to honor your father in a subtle, but still moving way at your wedding.

I love poetry; and I love heartfelt poetry. I took the liberty of playing around with an absolutely gorgeous poem. I mean no offense for touching your work, but if a single stanza works for you, feel free to use it on your wedding day.

The day of my wedding has now arrived, and while we can't see you,

we know, without a shred of doubt, that you'll hear the words, "I do".

You'll be waiting, right outside my door, as your little girl gets dressed

and once I appear as a vision in white, I'll feel the warmth of your sweet breath.

My groom, who's waiting for your girl, will lock eyes with your baby in white,

but we'll know that you are with me, and that makes perfection seem more right.

You are just where you belong, dear dad...positioned at the altar,

and because of the life you've given me, I know my love will never falter.

As we both take center stage and disappear into our first dance,

we'll know that you are in my eyes when I flash him that loving glance.

Our celebration will go on and on, and then we will stop to think,

that you are with each guest and friend, as they joyfully eat and drink.

Dad, you know you will be with us, no matter where we go,

and we will rely upon your wisdom, in the high times and the low.

Your eternal life will guide us as we walk the path of life,

and I know I will always adore you, whether a daughter or a wife.

Dad, you have found your great reward, and you will always be,

a permanent resident in my heart, for all eternity.
