Dealing with gray hair?

Sos0033, on June 5, 2017 at 11:01 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19

I'm only in my mid-twenties, but my # of gray hairs has been getting progressively worse lately ?? I've put off coloring my hair because it doesn't bother me that much on a normal day, but I definitely want to do something about it for my wedding day. Can I just dye it for the wedding, or will I have to upkeep it after? Is it worth it to dye everything or should I try one of those root touch-up products (pretty much all of my grays are short hairs by the root)? Either way, I definitely will trial it beforehand which is why I'm asking now Smiley smile

I would just start taking care of it now. The first gray hair I find will mark the start of me at least highlighting my hair on a regular basis. Why not talk to your hair stylist and see what they recommend?

I started coloring my hair at 19 due to greys and did it for almost 40 more years. It was Joe who convinced me to try to let the "silver out."

    Highlights help a lot!

Also using a temporary color rather than a permanent one so it will eventually wash out.

Good luck--let us know how it goes when you decide Smiley smile

@MacyP my stylist told me to absolutely start coloring it now and that I will need to upkeep it professionally at the salon every 2 weeks for like $150 a pop. I felt like I wasn't getting an honest answer and they were just trying to boost their business.

Omg you don't need to upkeep every two weeks. That's crazy. 6-8 weeks, maybe. I usually push longer.

Also hair chalk is something you can look into!!

It's not really recommend to mix professional and box dyes because your hair can react badly.

I go once every three months, ish, because I hate paying that much!

Towards the end I was coloring every two weeks. It took a lot of time and money!

Here is an old and a newer.

My grey hair came in soft, which alleviated my fear of wiry hair.

Every two weeks? For slight gray hair at the roots? That doesn't sound right...

I just get a rinse every 8 weeks. I don't want to do a perm color - been there, done that.

If you are just starting to get grays here and there maybe some balayage would camouflage them for you. It is a highlighting technique that looks very natural and grows out without much notice.

@sos every two weeks sounds excessive unless your hair grows really fast. If you're going back to natural after the wedding get an all over color as close to your natural color as possible so it won't look odd as it grows out.

I just convince myself that my gray hairs are really just highlights. Helps that they are pretty white and not gray and full strands.

@Nonna you have such a nice color! My mom is like that too. She would dye for so long, but then she started losing her hair from it! The color on her is just gorgeous, like yours!

    @nonna is a rockstar!!

I would maybe discuss semi permanent color with your hair stylist. It's easier on your hair and would cover what you need. I dye my own hair, but not from a box. I just mix my own from sallies. Mine seem to last anywhere from 3-4.5 months or so. If you don't want crazy upkeep, just do something close to your natural and with semi permanent it will eventually wash out. Smiley smile best of luck! Let us know how it goes!

Use a semi permanent! This will rinse out after a bit, so there will be no harsh change.

I've been covering my grays since college! So annoying.

I've found that root touch ups for some reason don't seem to work on my hair as well as just dying the roots with all over color. I don't know if that makes sense... what I'm saying is I don't use the brush, I mix up a whole bottle and put it on my head (not the ends bc I have ombré).

It's a pain. I'm 31 and have to dye mine every 3 weeks!

Don't dye it! Too much maintenance! (I'm lazy! haha)

I have some gray hair on my temples. I have black hair so they show a lot! I complained about it to my hair dresser and she whipped out a spray can of touch up dye. Sprayed my grays and sent me on my way! I had no idea something like that existed. Waaaay easier than dying!!! Smiley laugh

Edited to clarify-- this ^^^ was the day I had my hair done for the wedding. Smiley smile

@coastalbride the spray touch up dye is kind of what I was thinking since I really don't want to have to start permanently maintaining it. Do you know what brand your hair dresser used ?

For my greys I get highlights in the summer and then tone it down with a glaze in the fall and winter so the dimension is still there, but its just not as bright and it naturally fades out without the harsh dye-line.

One day I will gray gracefully, but today is not that day!

25 year old hairstylist here with rapidly multiplying grays - I wasn't going to dye mine but broke down and started using Demi-permanent color. I have baby fine, dry curly hair that is easily damaged by color processing, but the demi is pretty gentle and even conditioning. The color fades off of my grays over weeks of washing rather than leaving a harsh line of demarcation.

If you have the coloring to pull off blonde hair, I really recommend going lighter. Then again I am probably biased because I'm SO not a fan of the harsh root line OR having to touch up every 2-6 weeks. Do not put box (store-bought, non-professional) color on your hair.
