David's bridal tailoring vs other independent tailors

T & Co, on October 11, 2013 at 11:49 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18

David bridal claims you must go back to them to tailor a dress you purchased there. Now unless there is a special seams in their dresses, would there be any real negative consequences of finding another tailor to do the job?

They're blowing smoke up your ass. You can take your dress anywhere you want once it has been paid for. They're just trying to screw you out of money.

The only hold David's Bridal has over you is that if their tailors are unable to get the dress to fit you or screw up the alterations, they replace the dress. If your tailor screws up the alterations or can't get the dress to fit, you have to deal with the tailor to make you whole, not David's Bridal.

On the other hand, independent tailors tend to be a lot less expensive. And at DB, you take the luck of the draw on who alters your dress, while you can get recommendations on a specific person if you use an independent.

I bought my gown at David's and took it to an independent alterations woman. They have no control over who you use to do alterations.

I bought my dress at David's and used a local seamstress. One of the very best wedding decisions I made.

I just picked my dress up from them two days for alterations. It was horrible!!! I am no happy with the final result of my dress. The lady was rude at the first fitting. When I went wed to pick it up I put in on and they had completely screwed up the bustle. It was awful like 6 inches longer in the back bustled!!!!! I was so upset I didn't notice the front hem mess up. They did fix the bustle. I didn't notice the front hem

Mess up until I got home nothing I can do now unless I want to pay them more then the $424 I already did!!!! Go somewhere else if u can

David's Bridal expert here Smiley smile

They can't force you to get your dress alterations there. They will try and convince you that it would be best and most cost effective/convenient for you to do it through them. But it is absolutely not.

However, if you had your dress altered or cleaned by another seamstress or tailor, they will not take your dress at all. They won't even steam it.

Selling you a dress, they will always recommend going up a size. Or they will measure you and round up just because it's easier to take in than let out. But sometimes it's not necessary.

When they take in a dress each side is sectioned off by 4-5 sections. It will cost you $25 per section on each side to take in.

My best friend just got her BM dress altered and taking it in over a size and it's only costing her $25 and it's faster. Research more places.

I know 3 brides that were DB brides - none of them used DB for alterations (as the closest one is 3+ hours away).

There aren't. I went to an independent seamstress. You can take your dress wherever you damn well please. Any boutique that has an in-house seamstress is going to want you to go there and will advocate that. It's not just Davids.

David's IS overpriced in alterations and they are known to hire in-experienced seamstresses. While they give you the guarantee, if you get recommendations for another seamstress, you won't have to worry about that seamstress messing up your gown.

I bought my dress from DB and while I have yet to do alterations, I found their pricing to be very affordable. I plan to use their services soon.

Also, no one at DB told me I "had" to come to them for alterations. They didn't even suggest it in the slightest.

So out of the last 11 comments or so, one of them said they would actually use DB for alterations. I think it's pretty clear what you should do Smiley smile

I got my dress there and plan to take it somewhere else. As I have also been told by many people that they are overpriced. It's kind of silly they told you that you HAD to take it to them.

Yeah I would like to see what the cost difference is. It did not seem too bad for they claimed it was about 150 based on what I needed done. So it is not too extreme of a cost. I suspected there was no real reason why myself! Hopefully find out soon enough!

Hmm my mother has one of those steamers. Two of my dresses definitely need toe steamed. Would a person need training per se when working with bridal material?

I got my dress from David's and I'm not getting it altered there. She gave me a rough estimate of the price when I purchased my dress and it was ridiculous for the little I need done (don't remember the exact number). I also just got a satin BM dress hemmed like an inch there for a wedding I'm in and it was $60. I thought that was incredibly high for a simple hem, especially in my area.

That's cute, Candi. You should go in for an alterations fitting for a quote because that little pink paper they give you with the starting prices are very very false lol.

The David's bridal I bought my dress was very " hands off" from the beginning. The girl pulled me some dresses and I never saw her again. Had to offer mine through the lady that worked the register. When it was time to pick mine up, they just have me the dress and didn't even offer anything about alteration services, thank God, because I was all prepared to tell them NO based off of others experiences I've heard about.

The closest David's is over an hour from me so I found a seamstress in my town that is very reasonable. She is s mile away too, so it has worked out perfectly. Ask around to your friends and family and I'm sure someone can reccomend a local seamstress for you. good luck!

I bought my dress from DB, too. But I had a great consultant and she told me I didn't have to bring it in to them, just that the dress is guaranteed in the event they eff it up.

I'll probably take it to an independent seamstress. I like saving money.

I bought my dress at David's Bridal. It will need a hem, loops for the bustle, and I wanted it to be taken out in the hips a little. The estimate I got at the store was about $200. My mom has looked into some independent tailors. I thought it would be easiest to stay with DB because they steam it.. Any thoughts?
