David’s Bridal Plus Size Experiences?

Gina, on January 31, 2020 at 4:55 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14
Hey all,

I have my very first wedding dress appointment at David’s Bridal tomorrow on a weekend. I’m taking my mom. My wedding is a year away and I’m not buying anything because I don’t know if I will be the same size in a year. I just want to try on different styles and see what I like. I heard that the DB sales people get commission off sales and they hate brides like me. I’m also a size 18/20 and I feel that may complicate things. (Maybe take longer to find something for me to try on and longer to put it on, or have to clip the back or maybe they will pull things I’m not comfortable wearing) I know they will force you to finish your appointment by 1.5 hours and I don’t understand why you can’t stay longer. I don’t want to go all the way out there and only try on two dresses. I’m nervous this is going to be a bad experience. I live in California and will be going to the store in Roseville. Should I not tell them I’m not buying anything? Is there enough time to try on like ten dresses?

Help! What was your experience?

As a fellow fluffy girl, my DB experience was awesome. I went on a whim, alone with no intention of buying a dress. I had already bought what I thought was my dress dress online and when it arrived, the alterations were going to cost so much more than the dress that I wanted to look at other options. It was also during their $99 sale so I figured it couldn't hurt. My salesperson was great. She only showed me what I wanted and in my size. I was only there for maybe 45 mins and had already tried on 7 dresses! It goes a lot faster than you think. I would advise being honest. If you hate it, tell them and be up front at the beginning what your budget, style etc is and that you want to stay in that. I went in with no styles in mind so she showed me things she thought would work for me and we went from there. I could have easily tried on so many more dresses but I found one I loved, it fit great so I bought it. In and out in under an hour for $116! ($99 dress + tax)

I would suggest not telling them. Just in case you get a stylist that does not care to make you feel good at all. I tried plus 16/18 and the girl who helped me was supper amazing. She let me choose 2 styles, and after I didn't like them she asked more about my theme. I told her I wanted romantic vibes. She came with a dress I never would have expected and when I saw it in the bag I was like "hell no". Well to my surprise she picked the dress that looked amazing on me! You will likely only be able to try on 2 or three but if you need more time I would book another appointment.

I'm the same size as you and was so worried I wouldn't find anything that fit me. I went to DB without any intention of buying a dress. My consultant was fabulous!!! She asked my style, what I liked, etc .She pulled those and a couple of ones I wouldn't have considered. Every one I tried on fit me beautifully! I was torn between 2 and actually ended up buying one that day. I did go to another salon to try on a few more. Had a great experience there too with plenty of options to try on. None came close to my DB dress that I swore I wasn't ready to buy.

Good luck. Enjoy the process. It's fun playing dress up! lol Let us know how it goes.

Girl, I would not go on a weekend for pleasure shopping. Trust me - the consultants will be snippy and pressured by their managers to get through appointments, and its really not their fault. I think it's the fault of the corporation wanting them to see as many brides as possible. Its loud - women bring in parties of eight or more - and consultants are often tired and miserable and over it. All around, going on a weekend is often the McDonalds of shopping. Loud, gross, and the employees are exhausted. If you're already weary, I would highly suggest just seeing if you two can go on a weekday.

Now, my first appointment was on a whim on a Monday afternoon. It was so quiet. I got one on one time with the consultant, and even as a fluffy bride I was able to find things that fit and had zero judgement. We tried on about ten dresses, mostly designer. Their Oleg Cassini line is gorgeous, and a lot of their styles seem to be made for those of us with big bones. Also, the sample for the dress I ended up picking was too big for me! They're awesome about having dresses in your size. I was able to try on everything I liked, no problems. Trust the process and enjoy yourself. It's a lot of fun, and definitely go in with a shopping mindset so you don't buy something you hate.

I got my dress at David's. I'm a size 16 and they were very nice and helpful! They had tons of options in my size (and up to size 20 since I asked for 20s when I first got there). I did not feel pressured to buy anything but I did because I was so in love with the dress. I didn't get any accessories (which she had me try on) and just said I would have to get them another time and no one questioned it or has called/emailed asking me to get more stuff. Overall really great experience.

Thank you ladies so very much for taking the time to reply! I took what each of you said into consideration and I’m going to try to make it a good experience. I’ll just book another appointment if needed!

I would say don't tell them anything. You will buy the dress when you find what you want and know you are ready and that's the truth. They already know there is a chance you won't find the dress right way and have to try on others to make sure.

I went in during the $99 sale and tried on dresses. I was torn on the one I ended up trying on because the one I went in the store to try on was not available. They were fine and I ended up scheduling a bridal comeback appointment with the same person.

The second time I went in I tried on the first one again and liked it and tried on 2 others I thought I would like. At the last minute I told her to pick out something she thought I should try and it is what I ended up buying (but I still didn't buy that day because I was overwhelmed) of all 3 trips I never felt pressure to buy it but yes I am sure they would love you to

As for the size I ordered the size I was at the time. I've lost 15 pounds and I am still the same size so I just don't think that their dress sizes are a good indicator, but I get wanting to wait.

Oh and yes I agree they have a great plus size collection. Mine is plus and it is the same dress they sell in non plus size and I am telling you I don't think it looks plus sized.

My experience was terrible mostly because of my attendant Sydney. She was not helpful and was rolling her eyes at me and making faces at me the whole time. I felt judged. She wouldn't listen to me, lied about something that I caught on to, and said she didn't have anything simple like I wanted but I saw about ten dresses I would have loved to try on the way out the door that I think she didn't pull because they were cheap. She didn't follow up on the only two favorite dresses I had came to try on like she said she would. I was already anxious going to my very first wedding dress try on and I can't believe she treated me like this in front of my mom who was seeing me in a dress for the first time. Another customer stopped to over compliment me on one of the dresses because I think she could sense I was being treated so bad. The attendant kept telling me to completely cut and custom my dress and I told her I'm not that picky and I'm not spending 1k on alterations and completely changing a dress. I just wanted something simple, knew my style, and had enough information of what I wanted and didn't that it should have been very easy to find a dress. They didn't want to take the time to put me in a corset bra after offering it. I put on all the dresses myself and my mom had to zip two of them up herself. The dresses were too big for me and It was hard to see what it would look like. My earring came off and I couldn't bend over and the attendant wouldn't pick it up off the ground for me until I asked her. I liked a couple dresses and they ended up taking them away instead of writing the information down for me. I had to say no to the same dresses between the floor runner and the attendant several times. My only request was that I didn't want anything with large beading and they kept bringing me ugly beaded dresses and the same dress twice. Then at the end of the appointment, when my attendant was in the changing room with me, she had the audacity to say "well the appointment is over, maybe next time you won't be so nervous and you'll find a dress". Seriously made me want to cry. During the appointment the manager came around and asked my mom if everything was okay while I was in there, and my mom said yes because she hates conflict...but shouldn't she have come around and asked me THE BRIDE? Even if I was in the room it would have only taken seconds for her to wait. The appointment was supposed to be 1.5 hours and the attendant kicked me out after about 70mins and I didn't realize what time it was until we walked out the door and I looked at my watch. I feel totally upset about this entire ordeal and don't ever want to do this again.

Ugh, I'm sorry! What a mess. That is really not excusable, and I can see why you don't want to go back. At least you didn't buy a dress and lock yourself into them. I would see if there are any plus size salons around you. Maybe see if Torrid works? It sucks that they could be so good but just end up sucking.
