David’s Bridal alterations

Sarah, on March 28, 2018 at 4:40 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 21
Just out of curiosity...

i bought my dress from Davids Bridal and was planning to have my alterations done there- simply because they alter dresses all the time and will also clean it for me. I’m afraid that if I take it elsewhere and it gets ruined, I’ll be out of luck. I’m also keeping in mind that it is expensive to have a wedding dress cleaned, so it may just be a wash anyway even if the alterations are cheaper.

My dress needs to be taken in from a size 8 to a size 6, bra cups added, and a simple bustle. Does anyone have any experience in what they may charge for these 3 things?

I guess I’m leaning more towards just having David’s do it just for peace of mind.

My mother in law was going to do it with them but they were super over priced. She ended up taking it to someone else who cleaned and did the alterations. Just shop around and ask.

For what I have heard, David's Bridal is highly over priced. My seamstress has her own dry cleaning service too. I have been going to her for years. See if you can find a place like that.

I don't have experience with DB alterations, but I have had many clothes altered in the past, including several formal gowns and ballgowns.
If DB is too much money for you, I don't think you should be too worried about a seamstress ruining your dress. Make sure she has good reviews and experience. I've never had an issue with my seamstress, and I found her through word of mouth. If you're still worried, then shop around and get second opinions.

David’s Bridal isn’t necessarily “too much money for me,” but if it can be done cheaper- which I’m sure it can- I’d prefer that obviously. My question was more of how much they charge and whether that cost would be worth my peace of mind.

I need to get it hemmed and taken a little by waist. I have mermaid style first perfect on my hips but big on my waist. The told me the hemming was $80 and the other was around $150 I think. I can’t remember exactly but I know it was around that price range.

I’m doing it with them bc with everything else going on I don’t want to stress on looking for a trustworthy seamstress.

In regards to cleaning, do you have a ZIPS Dry Cleaners in your town? They only charge $2.75 per item of clothing to get dry cleaned, including wedding dresses. I took mine in (after purchasing it at Goodwill) and was pleasantly surprised.

I'm adding a belt to my dress and they gave a rough quote between $200-300 for the intake, hem, and belt. We paid about $300 for the dress. We don't want to pay as much for alterations as we did for the dress. There is another dress seller that has a list of seamstresses that they use. We are going to use one of them.

I have heard bad stories about the quality of alterations there, so that's why I am not getting mine done there. A bride here had her dress ruined and they wouldn't do anything about it.

Mine was $350. My hem was $150 they took up the straps a tad and added a bustle the bustle was expensive probably $175 and then the straps.

Cups are only a few dollars I think 8. Hem they told me starts at $125 but goes up depending on dress type & the amount of work. Mine is lots of layered tulle so I got the extra. Taking it in I have no experience with.

I got my dress altered at Davids Bridal! The alterations turned out very well and they did a good job. I don't know how much it would be compared to other places, but I can give you a run down of how much mine was.

    - added corset back & other adjustments to bodice $175
    - the bustle was $50 total for the first 3 points and then the rest were $7 each
    - cups sewn in $40 total ($20 for each cup)
    - hem $150

the total price was $513. My dress did have a lot of layers and lace which made it more expensive.

I included pictures of my dress (before & after alterations) to give you an idea of what needed to be done

David’s bridal quoted me way more than an individual seamstress and all David’s does to “clean” the dress is to steam it so it is not wrinkled, and any half respectable seamstress will do this also. It’s worth looking around in my opinion.

You should just go to DB because is your take it to some other seamstress that thinks they know what they are doing and mess your dress up, then DB won’t touch it or replace it. Go to DB
