David's Bridal Alterations

Catherine, on June 5, 2019 at 12:52 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20
Hi All, this is just to vent. I am not trying to shop around or anything, but i am shocked by the cost of alterations at David's Bridal! I went for my first fitting, and I told them i wanted the train cut off, instead of a bustle (my dress needed 24), because I greatly dislike the look of a bustle. They priced the hemming front and back!$150 for the front and $150 for the back, plus $35 to sew a "modesty" panel in (reasonably priced).I realize this isn't completely outrageous, but it cost only slightly less to cut the train off than to bustle (which would be $190). My dress is plain satin, no lace or beading or texture. I just can't believe i bought the dress for $500, and i am spending more than half more minor alterations.

Oh wow! Where are you located? I'm having my alterations done at David's and it's nothing like that. My dress is a ballgown with 7 layers and had to be hemmed and it's costing $65 and $205 for a bustle with 18 points, needs to be taken in on sides at waist only $35 , I'm in CA where every thing is expensive and I think my alterations are reasonable.

I'd get quotes from other tailors just to see. I'm in Denver, my dress was $1,600 and I paid another $700 in alterations for my bustle, taking the sides in, adding detachable sleeves, and lowering the back.

My dress was bought at David's bridal as well as alterations were done with them and I paid $40 more for the dress than I did for alterations so I completely understand this!

This is exactly why even though I bought my dress at DB I found a local seamstress to do my alterations. She was amazing and to take my dress in, hem the front (a bunch of layers of tule) add a very fancy 9 point bustle and make me a lace edged cathedral veil from 2 separate veils and it only cost $75

I feel your pain! Just to hem mine is going to be $150. There's not any good local tailors in my area either

Can I see a picture of your dress? I got mine at DB too and it sounds similar to mine, price and all, lol. But this is what I'm nervous about. I need cups put in and hemming done, and I'm just scared theyll try to overcharge.

I had a David's Bridal dress, but used a local seamstress for alterations. She came with stellar reviews, which she fully justified. And it was $100 total for taking out the bodice and creating a blusher for my veil.

Mine is VERY similar to yours! I'll attach a picture.
Now I'm a little nervous on just the minor things I need done to mine. By the way, I love your dress and you look amazing in it.

I love your dress too! You look Stunning!

I definitely think they over charge. The front hem is a flat $150, i think the bustle is $45 for the first three, then $7 each. Mine would have been $190. I don't know how much cups would be though.

I wish I paid that little for alterations. I feel alterations on wedding dresses are always more expensive than normal alterations. I am paying about half of the price of my dress for alterations, which is no fun.

My MOH just recommended a seamstress to me. She bought her dress at DB and said the woman did all the alterations she wanted for half the price that the store would have charged her. So I'll definitely be price shopping before getting alterations...

I work at David’s Bridal as a bridal stylist in Michigan, the alterations are ridiculous. I think I was told a bridesmaid’s dress hem is between $40- $60. Like, why? I feel for you girl!! Honestly I always recommend that if you have a DB dress to stick with their alts team. They work on those dresses every day and really know what they’re doing. But, since it’s technically a retail chain I feel like that’s why it’s over priced. DB is meant to be convenient but convenience comes at a price sometimes. If it’s not too late I would try and find someone local! Good luck to you!!

I was a bridesmaid for my sister in laws wedding and had cups installed, that was a few years ago but I know it wasn't too much.
But still for alterations $150 at the least is just ridiculous... I may be shopping around for options first. I luckily have some time!

I was going to suggest taking it to your own seamstress as well. I mean, you just heard that from a DB stylist, Futuremrs.f, so it must be good advice.

Just because you buy a dress from X place doesn’t mean they are the only ones who can alter it. For example, the place I bought my dress from wanted me to come in for alts in MARCH for my AUGUST wedding. Their reasoning was because I bought mine off the rack and they just get too busy leading up to these summer weddings and can only take special order dresses in. So, I went somewhere else! There are a million seamstresses out there. You’ll find someone!

I just paid 480 for mine today. The woman orginally tried to tell me I needed 37 bustle points on my dress. I told her I wasnt paying over 600 on a 1000 dress. She then re did and told me she could get away with 23.... I wasnt happy.

Funny...I had the opposite experience. My alterations quote from David's was $250 less then the local seamstress.

I'm getting my alterations at TLC bridal and formal LLC! She is doing everything I need for $115! I'm getting cups sewn in, a shrink stitch, my bust and sides taken in, a seam sewn down that was incorrectly done when they custom made my gown as well as a free steam and press! Her name is Trudy and she's so sweet! I will forever recommend her!
