Dancing with no dance floor?

Marie, on January 2, 2020 at 10:31 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 6

We're getting married at a private cabin next July, and there's a big, flat outdoor space that already had string lights strung across it. We'd like to have dancing in that area, but we're wondering if we can get away with not having a dance floor. Will people dance without a dance floor signaling that "this is where you dance?" Will it be annoying to dance on grass? Has anyone had dancing at an outdoor wedding without a dance floor?

As long as the space is open and there is music playing, people will get the idea.

I’ve been to a wedding that just had an open grass area as a dance floor and it was fine! I would just make sure the grass is even with no holes to avoid anyone falling or getting hurt!

If I were wearing heels or a long dress I wouldn’t dance on grass. Wouldn’t want to wreck the grass or my clothes/shoes. If I’m dressed more casually I’d be open to it, but might not know or assume that the grassy space is where we’re supposed to dance.

Wherever the DJ or band is set up I’d naturally assume that right next to them is where the dancing should happen.

I was going to have my dance floor on grass, but I decided against it because it could rain and make the ground all muddy.

I ended up renting a dance floor, and it wasn't too much $$$.

I'm wondering the exact same thing. Our venue has cement but not a lot to dance with, but our wedding is small, only 40 guest. I know for sure the kids will dance, maybe people will just follow them lol.

If people want to dance they will find a way. They dance on grass with no issues during summer concerts etc so why is your wedding different?
