Dancing in off the shoulders gown

Brianna, on May 17, 2020 at 11:54 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 13
Hey all! I am currently looking at wedding dresses and fell head over heels for this dress from Lyra Vega Bridal. I did some research and found a video on YouTube about this specific dress and the girl said there was no way you can dance in it. It kind of killed me because this dress is the one I can see myself wearing for my wedding but I am 5’1 and my fiancé is 6’2 and I want to be able to dance our first dance. Any tips on this?Dancing in off the shoulders gown 1

When you tried it on did you raise your arms and move around a bit?

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to dance in it? Did they give you an explanation? I used to go dancing all the time at clubs with FH and some of my fave dresses are off the shoulder and I haven't experienced problems... Maybe her dress was fitted too tight and she couldn't move? Btw - BEAUTIFUL dress!!

With a lot of wedding dresses with sleeves you can’t move your arms up (or even hug very well). Mermaid dresses can be tight too (don’t allow the seamstress to make too tight or you can’t sit!). I think for a slow dance with your spouse it’ll be ok. Then you can change into a reception dress to party down.

Idk if this an allover thing, but David's Bridal added elastic into the off the shoulder straps on my dress. I haven't tried it on because Covid, but she showed me the general idea is to have the straps attached to elastic so they move with your arms. Yours is a little different, but I'm sure its doable! I have the same problem as you - I'm 5' 6" and my husband is 6' 3" - but the elastic soothed my worries.

Hmmm...I tried on the sample for my off-the-shoulders dress and I didn’t even consider this. Luckily FH & I are the same height. We may just look awkward Dancing 😂

Ah you know what I can see that. Mermaid dresses aren’t as easy to move in and those sleeves do look like you can’t raise your arms up as comfortably

Are you open to having a separate dress for your reception? If this is your dream dress, you could wear it for the ceremony and photos and then have an inexpensive white dress to wear at the reception.

I am kind of dead set on just one dress. I previously bough a Hayley Paige ballgown in the style Bowie but my fiancé saw it and kind of let me know that he knew I wouldn’t be happy with it (bought it because of a good deal) so I need to kind of keep the expenses low

Can you wear that dress for the reception since you already have it?

I had an off the shoulder dress and had no issues during our first dance!! I couldn't get down the way I wanted during the cha cha slide but that was about it lol. Make sure that you can raise your arms during alterations. They can always loosen the sleeves. I wanted to take mine in and she told me no because I wouldn't be able to raise my arms. I'm so glad I listened lol!!

I LOVED the look of wedding dresses with long illusion lace sleeves but illusion lace is delicate and does not stretch. Generally (and even more so if you have muscular shoulders) you cannot lift your arms past shoulder height in dresses styled like this. I tried on several dresses with illusion lace sleeves and decided they were too impractical for me (I have muscular shoulders and like to put my arms in the air when I dance). This style would be even worse (I imagine) because of the off-the-shoulder structure and lace used in that area. The only long sleeved dress I tried on that would have worked for me was one that was a crepe/stretch jersey material, but I could see some looser fitting boho style dresses with more billowy sleeves being fairly easy to move in as well.

I bought an off the shoulder and was worried I wouldn’t be able to get the sleeves adjusted so this makes me so so happy. I’m 5’ and my fiancé is 6’ 3” so I definitely need my arms to move...never though about this when buying the dress
