Dance With Dad

IronMaiden, on February 24, 2017 at 7:04 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 29

My dad and I are close but I am NOT a Daddy's girl. He and I have our issues but we work together, and spend a lot of time together. He is not emotional or sensitive and I am hyper of both. He's said he loves me maybe 10 times in my life and we have hugged less than that.

But, he wants to do the dad/daughter dance at my wedding (I'm shocked and thrilled!). I want to find a nice song to dance to with him that isn't dripping with daddy-daughter-princess-I'm-going-to-shoot-you-if-you-hurt-my-baby-girl-ness. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, it's just not us. Any song suggestions? (Please, no Country.)

Thank you in advance!

So funny, I just came from dance lessons with my dad! Do you have Groupons? We did 3 classes for $50. Still 4 left feet though! I've been googling a bunch bc we're going to split our songs into "isn't she lovely" (sappy) to some 70s Saturday Night Fever. Good luck! (And practice a lot)

Dream by Priscilla Ahn or Daughter by Sleeping at Last. You sound like me, I hate country and didn't want a typical father daughter song like you said. I suggested those two to my dad. He actually wanted a typical father daughter song and kept suggesting country, and we settled for Edwin McCain walk with you. But sleeping at last was my first choice.

I do have Groupon, but I'm pretty sure if I suggest lessons, my dad will retract his offer. I'm going to have to force him to practice with me after hours when our office closes. If he wasn't in poor physical health, we'd probably start with a super sappy song, confuse the guests and then bust into a dance during Fortunate Son by CCR. Smiley smile

@Chrissy- thank for the tip! My Dad wants to do lessons.

We are dancing to the Hawaiian version of somewhere over the rainbow. My Dad loves that song. What type of music does he like? Maybe a Beatles song would be good.

Curious about this! I have been thinking about Fleetwood Mac but it might be too sappy.

My dad's not really into music... But I grew up listening to the same few cassettes in the car with him when he'd pick me up from school: Simon & Garfunkle's Greatest Hits, Beatles- Srgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Creedence's Greatest Hits, and Traditional Catholic Christmas Carols (year round). He likes The Doors, Yes, Creedence, etc.

@Megan: What Fleetwood Mac song were you thinking?

Not at ALL close with my dad (we no longer speak) but he was at my wedding & wanted to dance. We did "unforgettable" by Nat King Cole.

Mack the Knife. It has nothing to do with relationship between father/daughter but my dad likes it a lot and likes to jitterbug to it.

You want something a little less traditional? You can do "You're my Best Friend" by Queen then there's "Here for You" by Neil Young. You could do something just for him and go with "Simple Man"

Ohh and "She's a Rainbow" by the Rolling Stones.

Or you can get a little more traditional but not too sappy and go "In my Life" by the Beatles

Gram Parsons - "A song for you"

    "Time after Time" Cindy Lauper

Or you can get a little more emotion and a little more new-age and do "Daughters" by John Mayer

My Dad and I aren't super close but he raised me on the Eagles, we are dancing to "Love Will Keep Us Alive".

My dad and I are super close, but we have had our rough patches. We are dancing to God Only Knows by Beach Boys...which I recently found is the theme to Big Love...

My dad and I are going to do a tango. Lol. There is a studio that offers lessons in my town. It was his idea. I think it will be fun and special without the "sap."

My mom loved Unforgettable by Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole, so I thought it'd work twofold...as a memory of her and a not so sappy "daddy" daughter dance.

Great suggestions! Thank you, everyone! I'm starting to make a playlist of all of these songs on my Spotify so I can hear them all. Smiley smile

@Gia - Honestly, despite the songs not having father/daughter 'meaning' on the face of it, I'd go with one of the options you listed in your post about songs you two listened to together, because they actually have meaning to the both of you.

I found this one in my collection. Have a Little Faith- Michael Franti & Spearhead. Would anyone be willing to listen to it and tell me what you think?
