Dance Lessons - What should i expect?

Lauren, on August 5, 2019 at 11:44 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 13

My FH is so sweet, he researched and signed us up for a free dance lesson consultation.

I am not much of a dancer, just weddings and I took a couple of years of jazz dance classes at the YMCA when I was 6. Smiley xd

What should I expect at the first dance lesson? What should I wear? How much is reasonable to pay for maybe 4-6 lessons to practice for our first dance?

We are not looking to have a whole choreographed amazing first dance just something slightly more interesting than a sway. I'm not against the sway it's just that we are having a videographer and I want them to have a little something more to work with.

We did dance lessons and at our consultation our instructor listened to our song and told us what dance she thought would go best with it. Then she showed us some steps. We signed up for 10 dance lessons and paid $100 per lesson.

We just did this last week! It was so much fun! I would recommend knowing your song before you go (we didn’t) or at least having it narrowed down to a few. They will show you some steps and how to string some different things together so you aren’t just doing he same thing over and over again. i would also recommend wearing your wedding shoes (practice dancing in them!)

    Thank you Kelly!

What dance did you end up doing? Do you think it was worth it?

We are at the end of planning and I'm debating whether the expense is worth it.

We ended up doing the quickstep. We had a whole choreographed dance including a lift and it was a lot of fun for us. Leading up to our wedding we had a lot of stressful things happening with family so dance class was something we looked forward to and a way to laugh and get our mind off of everything. So for us it was totally worth it and we loved how surprised our guests were.

My fiance always wore tennis shoes & gym shorts but I couldn't, my feet would slip. I wore tennis shoes to the appt then brought my boots for the wedding to put on when we got there. We paid around $100 per lesson for 1 hour lessons.

Thank you! I'm so glad to hear it is worth it. I will have to grab my wedding shoes from my mom's house for the next lesson. I am going to look ridiculous because no one is really supposed to see my shoes. I bought them as a splurge.

That is so awesome! I hope we can pull off a nice dance. I think it would be fun! I am also looking forward to it as a form of exercise.

Yes I was definitely sore afterwards! It was a lot more of a workout than I thought it would be.

I wore regular shoes to the studio, but you can bet I wore leggings with my white glitter 5” Louboutins for those 45 minutes haha you won’t look silly!

You might check Groupon as I often see dance lessons on there, in our area anyway. I bought one for two 45 minute private lessons for about $40. Of course, it was really a bargain price as a sales opportunity to sell more expensive lessons packages. As with others, the packages ended up being about $100/hour (though there were also group classes included). We brought our song to the first (cheap) lesson - she told us it was a rumba and taught us a basic box step and two additional steps. We decided that we didn't want to spend more, so at the next lesson she taught us one more move and how to begin and end the dance. It sure won't be flashy, but we can now do more than sway.
