Dance lessons for first dance?

Jocelyn, on September 11, 2019 at 5:08 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 12
Hey there! So in order to trim wedding expenses, my finance and I were thinking of taking out dance lessons for our first dance...we did one free session and 4 more would cost 300. We both don't have any dance experience but my dress is pretty big so I don't expect to be able to do anything crazy in it so I was wondering if you guys think it's necessary and if you took lessons for your first dance?

I don’t think it’s necessary at all. If you guys want to do something choreographed, there’s lots of tutorials available for free online that you could teach yourselves. Otherwise, just sway back and forth in circles—everyone will cry just the same haha.

My advice ice would be to practice dancing in the shoes you plan to wear as soon as you get them, though. You’ll be able to break them in and feel out how to move in them.

I have a dance background so I was able to teach my husband the box step. It is very simple to learn and looks nice when you do it. I recommend choosing a simple step like the box step and practicing that with a few twirls. Go to youtube for a basic tutorial.

I don't think you really need formal dance lessons! As PP said, YouTube tutorials would be a helpful (and cheaper) alternative

I agree PP watching you tube tutorials can be very helpful! My fh and I both have dance background but wanted to learn a few trickier moves and will be watching them to do so.

I personally don’t think is necessary specially if you’re not planning any choreograph. With one session you did should be enough. If you think you need more then do this on your own maybe use some YouTube videos for tutorial or just practice some more. I’ll use the $300 elsewhere.

I plan too! It's my dream to do the Viennese waltz. I took ballroom dance lessons when I was in high school. I don't know if many people think it's important enough to get dance lessons. 50/50 I think. I think it's a nice hobby or skill in the future, but I'm biased. I think you could do quite a bit in a ballroom dress 😉

I love the Viennese Waltz. This is REALLY what I want to do for my dance haha
My FH and I plan on taking a few dance classes to try it out & as a date night (they serve wine at the dance studio) so we’ll see how we like it & hopefully we learn something.

Oh, my! It does look intimidating, doesn't it? I know only the regular one, but I don't know how they go so quickly without getting dizzy. That sounds really fun! I hope I can get wine too haha

Also, sometimes universities have ballroom dancing clubs and they usually allow non-students. They're very cheap if you aren't shy. I think you can find cheaper classes also that make you switch partners

We take lessons. Super fun...super expensive. But, I love it and it's worth the expense for us. We have been focusing on the hustle and now moving to Latin. We intend to start our first dance off with a slow and cheesy song where we are swaying and then have it seem like something went wrong with the DJs equipment and switch it to a hustle song like rock with you by MJ or September by earth wind and fire (wedding is in September). We'll do our thing for a minute and then end it with inviting guests to dance with us. This will be our opening of the dance floor and I think it will set the tone for the rest of the evening.

I have an a-line gown, but I'm bringing a dress to change into just in case it gets too hot from dancing 😂.

Cut it! But do practise. Watch some YouTube videos and find what works for you two.
