Dance Lessons, a do or not necessary?

Magz1018, on February 17, 2014 at 7:38 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

My fiance and I haven't really slow danced together, as two women we aren't sure who leads and who follows... we did a practice run at home and stepped on each others toes and became silly. Should we get formal dance lessons or do you think we can just practice more at home?

Maybe firmly decide who should lead and who should follow? I think after deciding that, try it a few more times at home. If that still doesn't work out, seek professional help!

Unless you are wanting to do some kind of ballroom dancing I would just practice at home! you could always try to learn from blogs and youtube before you go out and pay for lessons!

Do you want to do a first dance at your wedding? Nothing says you have to if you don't enjoy it Smiley smile

@Tina we definitely want to have one. Most aspects of our wedding are non-traditional. Also our Entertainment Team does something really special during the first dance, it's so special that there won't be a dry eye in the place!

I would recommend lessons just because they are so much fun to take with your SO. However if you don't feel comfortable you can always practice at home. I agree, have someone decide to be the leader and just go from there (the taller person would probably work best just because it will make things easier). Another option is to purchase an at home dance lesson DVD specifically for weddings, which isn't as great as going to a class but could be just as fun.

That's the one our instructor recommends but he is biased as he is the instructor in the video

Honestly, I think that unless you want to do a fancy dance, you don't need to. FH and I are terrible at dancing and we aren't bothering to take lessons. We figure the ol' middle school shuffle is good enough and because everyone knows us they won't expect anything more than that lol. If you really want to do a fancier dance than that or think lessons might be fun, go for it, but it's not really needed.

In that case, get some lessons. They are invaluable, lots of fun and take the stress off. Doesn't have to be choreographed, just so you are comfortable Smiley smile

My FH and I are probably going to do some sort of dance lesson offered by the local community education people. Not because we want a big, fancy choreographed dance, but because FH is really uncomfortable on the dance floor, and I think that taking a lesson would make him a little more at ease when the time comes. Smiley smile Also, it sounds like so much fun!

I also think it will be fun. It's just so expensive in NY so I'm trying to really see if is worth it. We will try online videos and go from there. Thanks for the feedback!

If you REALLY have two left feet, then maybe a lesson or two won't hurt. No need to learn all the crazy stuff! A little direction wouldn't hurt.

CeCe that's a great tip about the DVD's, I've just had a look and put a bid on one on EBay. We don't want to do dance classes or anything, but FH is especially concerned about wanting to look good and we'd like to do something a bit more than shuffle in a circle (but not much more! We don't want to go all choreographed and cheesy!). Normally FH doesn't dance at all unless he has a beer in his hand, but I've told him that's not an option! This could be a perfect solution for us - learn a little, get more comfortable, but not go overboard.

We actually found lessons at our gym and it was only $40 a person. See if there are other alternative dance lesson options out there that aren't through a dance studio.
