Dance Floor

Joneka, on January 24, 2025 at 5:51 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 4
We are planning to hold our ceremony and reception in the backyard. Did anyone forego a dance floor? I really dont want to rent one or make one out of pallets. Thinking just set up tables in a way that designates the space as the dance floor.

My SIL had her wedding ceremony and reception in her yard/driveway. She didn't rent a dance floor as she just planned on using the driveway as the dance floor. Unfortunately right after the ceremony it started pouring so other than the groom dancing with his mom and the bride dancing with her mom (she's estranged from my FIL) no one was able to dance even with having a tent the rain and wind were so bad the driveway ended up soaking wet. Personally, I would recommend having a backup plan in case of bad weather because a lot of the things she planned went to waste. She had yard games none of which anyone could play. She was so distracted by the rain desserts were left in the house so a bunch of food went to waste. People were having to huddle under the tents hoping not to get wet. The grass was soaked as well. It honestly didn't make for very much fun.

Do you have a paved area? I wouldn't want to dance on grass, and I'm a dude, so all my fancy shoes are flat. If your ground is even a little soft, heels are gonna sink. If it rains, there's going to be mud. Even if it's a couple sheets of chip board covered by a rug, I think having some even, hard ground is best. I wouldn't anticipate many people dancing if you skip it.

If you want people to dance at your wedding, you need to signal that to your guests with a dancefloor. As a Host, you direct the schedule and your guests look to you for this. Otherwise, they'll just roam and socialize like at any backyard party such as a BBQ. If there's no itinerary, guests may even leave early.

If you have a brunch wedding, guests may not dance as much with or without a dancefloor.
