Dads & Officiant Attire

None of our fathers matched each other or the groomsmen, they just wore whatever suit they had

They don’t usually match each other or the wedding party. The officiant usually isn’t someone the couple knows well enough to impose an attire request upon so they wear what they want. The fathers usually wear what they want, but you can make suggestions!


My officiant is a woman (and a relative), and I think she’s wearing a dress of some kind. My step dad is wearing a black suit that he already owns, and the groom and groomsmen are wearing gray.

We didn’t tell our dads or officiants what to wear. They’re all adults. They dressed according to the formality of our wedding.

I think this is one part of weddings that people different on greatly. Some people are very concerned about cohesion and coordinating colors when it comes to their pictures. Others don’t really care. I think you should do whatever makes you and the parties involved feel most comfortable. There is no “right” or “wrong” 😊

Our officiant work a neutral outfit, but I honestly can't remember what color it was.
We asked both fathers to wear gray suits but we also knew neither dad had a suit and were going to be purchasing specifically for the wedding. If either father already had a suit we would have been ok with whatever they owned.

I have never heard of telling the officiant what to wear. Our dads didn't match. My dad wore a medium gray suit and his dad wore a black suit. His dad already had 1 and my mom bought my dad a suit that fit him and was on sale (he literally never wears a suit so didn't want to spend tons of money on something he won't wear more than maybe 2-3 times counting my wedding). I think our officiant (husband's uncle) wore a black suit. The pictures all look nice. Unless one of them pulls out a Dumb and Dumber style baby blue or orange tux, most suits are neutral colors that will blend fine.

We didn't tell our dads or our officiant what to wear. We let them choose. Both of our dads ended up in navy suits and our officiant wore a simple black dress with a shawl.
