Dad in wheelchair walking down the aisle?

Deirdre, on April 13, 2018 at 12:04 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 16
My dad has MS and is in an electric wheelchair. Obviously he's going to wheel me down the aisle, any suggestions on how to make this go smoothly/ should I scooter onto the back?? Help please! The wheelchair has obviously always been in the cards, but only been in use for the last 6 months. Thank you

My little sister who's going to be my flower girl has CMT, and she'll be in an electric wheelchair as well. My best suggestion would be to have a wide aisle, and give him and yourself plenty of room. Do you have a tight fitting dress, or more of a ballgown style?

I would also be aware of where your train lands. You don’t want it to get run over.
A scooter on the back would be silly and I love the idea of you embracing it (as long as dad is okay with it!)

I'm assuming you chose a venue that has an aisle wide enough for you and your father and his chair. Really, it just comes down to practice, practice, practice. Go for walks with him on the sidewalk and find a pace that works for you both. I would suggest you wear flats, nerves can kick in and a slight jolt to that control can wipe you off your feet. My other suggestion is a skateboard. You can ride on it next to him, and kick it behind you when he hands you off, and instruct someone in the front to grab it. Again, practice with both on the sidewalks, unless you have a lot of the sloping driveways, then use a residential street. That's what we do with my Mom.

I'm doing a pretty tight fitting dress with no train, no steps either. I neeex to check the width of the aisle, but I'm not a flats person

You should be able to walk next to him at a normal pace, just have him find a comfortable speed using his power wheelchair. I wouldn’t scateboard or scooter with him, it is quite normal to walk along side someone using a power chair.

You should be fine then. Just practice on a sidewalk.

I was only able to find a couple of pictures on Pinterest, and they're with regular wheelchairs, not power ones. But they show that it looks and functions perfectly fine for you to just walk beside him holding hands. Is the ceremony somewhere that you can go to together sometime before the wedding and take some time practicing to get the pace right and make you both feel more relaxed and comfortable with it?

I would suggest practicing with him too, pace yourselves and make sure he is on a very low setting or he’ll run you over! (My mom has MS and is in an electric scooter too, so I know from experience that you do not want to get run over! Lol luckily, we’re bringing her wheelchair instead so an usher can push her down the aisle to her spot!) also, make sure to remove the chair (or two) for where you want him to sit up front!

In one of the full galleries my photographer sent me the bride's father was in an electric wheelchair where his hands weren't free, it had a handlebar thing like the ones at the grocery store. She just held her bouquet and walked beside him.

My mom walked me down the aisle, it was logistically easier and better for my dad that way, and he didn’t feel left out at all. We’re not super traditional, so it was still wonderful.
