Cutting Cake and Serving Cake?

Stephanie, on March 22, 2018 at 2:44 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 18
Hello all!!

My fiancé and I are toying with the idea of getting a small, two layer decorative wedding cake that we cut and for photos and then a sheet cake of the same flavor in the back to cut and serve. We have heard of a few friends of ours that have done this and said it saved a bunch of money.

Has anyone done/doing this for their wedding? Opinions?

I think this is a good idea! If the sheet cake tastes great, I don't care if I get a piece of the fancy cutting cake.

I think that's a great way to save money and an area where your guests won't care at all. Go for it!

It's definitely an option! Some places actually charge a lot less for cupcakes that a tiered cake, so you can do half cake/half cupcakes if you want to mix up the flavors.

Yes we are doing this. A 2 tier wedding cake and a sheet cake in back. Total $400 including delivery and set up. Initial quote was $750 for A 4 tier cake

I have been to a couple weddings that did this. No one even knew the difference. They got the sheet cakes from the same baker and just had them brought out!

We are doing this as well. 2 tier cutting cake (we are not saving the top tier) and kitchen cakes in the back. Our bakery basically said it looks just like our cake in rounds, but isn't decorated. We're spending about $450. Other bakeries were quoting us $700+

We are also doing a two tier cake. I will also have a sheet cake. Once the cake is cut I do not think anyone will notice.

This is what we are doing!! We are getting a 2 tier from a bakery & using it for pictures and then saving the top. We will get sheet cakes from a different place & it’s going to be just as good. The cake in wedding cakes always tastes weird to me so we aren’t going to a specifically wedding cake designer bc I don’t ever like the flavors.

We are doing a two tier cake for us and sheet cake and groms cake for everyone else. It's much more economical and I'm not sure anyone will care as long as the flavors are the same and it taste good.

We did this at my first wedding - small cake for photos and eating then a sheet cake to supplement. No one knew nor cared. Great money saving idea!

We are doing a small tiered cake for us, wedding party, and immediate family. Then we're getting some nicely decorated sheet cakes from a grocery store (that makes really yummy cakes) for the guests. $60 will get us all the sheet cake we need for 100 people and we can get the small tiered cake inexpensively from a local baker.

I’m doing a 2 tier cake but was going to see the difference in adding an extra tier. But reading all these comments, I may just buy a sheet cake since it’ll prolly be cheaper getting 1 sheet cake and it will have more slices.

Yes! Save $$$$$. My sister did this. Her 3 layered cake for 50 was $450 and the sheet cake was about $250. If she got a 3 or 4 tiered cake, it would have been about $1200.

Yes, I did. I had a small 2 tier cake, and a 1/2 sheet cake. Saved me a few hundred dollars.
