Cut off age for flower girls

Mrs. P. NYC, on November 3, 2009 at 7:02 PM Posted in Planning 0 15

What is the cut off age for flower girls? How many do you have normally? I have 5 kids to choose from but I don't want all 5 because that is too much of a circus for me. It is hard to do without offending someone.

I think you hit the nail on the head when you say that 5 is a bit of a circus (for those little girls as well!) I would chose the one or two closest to you if possible and if that is not I would not do any. There is no rule you 'need' a flower girl.

The "Miss Manners" rule is young enough to say, "Awww aren't they cute...." any older and they're jr. bridesmaids.

Likewise, olde enough to NOT run screaming in the wrong direction. I usually ask mom/auntie/grandma/ in the front to scoop them into their laps if they get too fidgety. I have seen a wedding where there were no grown up attendants, just the children - it was charming.

I know my flower girl is going to be 10 years old. I don't care if anyone says that is too old, or that she is too tall, because she is special to me and she's going to look absolutely adorable.

As far as five, yeah, that might be too many flower girls... If you wanted to include them all in someway though, it is possible.

Maybe the youngest 2 could be flower girls and walk side by side. The more mature ones could be Jr. Bridesmaids if you don't mind having a large wedding party. Or maybe you don't have a ring bearer? Why couldn't one of the girls be in charge of that? There are lots of possibilities.

Congratulations on your engagement!! Have fun wedding planning!

FH has a 9yr old sister and we decided to make her a Junior Bridesmaid. She is super excited because she gets to dress similar to the older girls and she's at that age where she wants to start acting older lol.

I had 6 flower girls ranging in age from 5 to 10. They were all our nieces there was no possible way to choose between them and I couldn't imagine having our day without them ALL! I also had my 14 yo niece as my MOH. We didn't have any BM or GM and we had 2 ring bearers (our nephews) There really is no specific way you have to organize your wedding party you need to do what you are comfortable with. My sil had my husband as the ring bearer at 13 and their sister as the flowergirl at 14.

Thank you all for your imput. I am pulling my hair out. I have not chosen a bridal party yet because there a just way too many to choose from and they all live in Ireland. I have 5 sisters, 3 brothers and 11 nieces and nephews. They will all be coming to NYC for the wedding. The 5 girls are from my FH side (great-nieces) but from two different families and are between age 3 to 8 but all live here and are just waiting to be asked. It is just so hard to pick between them because they are just kids and you cannot disappoint them. It is making me crazy.

I couldnt imagine picking between! that can be hard!!! im lucky i dont have that problem..my 6 year old sister is my flower girl...the two ring bearers are my brothers and theyre 5 and 3. We dont think the littlest one will stand up there that long..but thats ok..if he wants to sit he can, my mom will be in the front row anyways so he can sit with her! good luck on your wedding tho!! having so many flower girls will turn out to be fun and you'll be soooo glad u included everyone! Smiley smile

I think 3 may be a little too young. The rule I had was if they can't talk they can't take the walk. We exclude a niece and nephew for this reason. We figured if you can't talk clearly then you can't take direction well.

I personally don't think that 5 is too much. I had 3, ages 3, 6, and 8. I had them all walk down together and it was adorable. They are all my nieces. Are you having ring bearers? you can always have a ring bearer escort a flower girl. I think 2 is too young, unless there is an older one to help her down the aisle. And that 10 is too old. My 10 year old niece was my BM

I had a 3 year old (my lil cousin) for my flower girl. At the rehearsal she cried the whole time!!! But of course she was ok during dinner. So, with her crying I totally thought she wasn't going to do it the day of the wedding. But when it came down to it, she was ready! Even more ready than the ring bearer (my nephew). She walked in and out of the ceremony perfect! She loved her dress...cried when she had to take it off! BUT...she was also flower girl at my cousin's wedding that was 5 months after mine and she didn't make it down the aisle. She saw all the people and took off running crying. But she managed to walk out. Good luck with picking. It's a hard choice when you know so many kiddies. Go with who you're closest to and won't give you trouble. Cheers!
