Cut Dress or Get Bustle?

JSull, on February 14, 2017 at 2:05 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 28

Hey everyone. So I didn't expect to already have a dress but it came in SUPER early! I am picking it up in a few days. I'm questioning if I should have it cut to one length or bustle it..... It has a tiny little train which I'm not sold on. I'm getting married outside and the reception is in a barn. I want to be able to dance my heart out so I have to do something. The only bustle I liked that the alterations department showed me was actually a bustle that goes underneath it to make it look like it's one length. That just happens to be the most expensive option. Not sure. Thoughts?

ETA: Stock Davids Bridal photo of back. I didn't have a pic of me in it of the back.

@Sara&L I'm right there with you. I chose a dress where the 'bustle' is actually just pinning the train up underneath it and you can't even see that it's bustled because I hate them so much.

Thanks ladies. The traditional bustles just didn't match up with the pleats, which is why I loved the dress in the first place. I didn't think the train was long enough to make a big difference in the bridal look but I get it. I will see how much a private seanstress charges for the under bustle.

Yes @mrssullivan don't do any alterations with David's. They're so stupidly expensive. You'll get a better quote from a local person!

I think I'm also team #cutit! I really don't like the way most bustles look, so if you aren't sold on the mini train at all then I'd have it all hemmed to one length!

I would talk to the alterations depth before you decide. I was looking at a dress at David's Bridal that had a similar length train. I mentioned to the salesperson that I would probably want to just cut it off because we are having a beach ceremony and I don't want to be collecting sand in it. I was told that David's Bridal alterations will not cut the trains off the dress. They are only allowed to do alterations to make the dress fit your body. Not alterations that will change the look of the dress. She said it's in the contracts they have with the designers. I didn't end up buying a dress from them, bso I don't know if it's actually true or if different areas have different policies. But, something to look into.

When my MOH just recently got married she wore that exact same dress. She also got married outside in a pavilion like area, and she cut it. It worked out great that way and she was able to move around and dance with no problems!

@WWLynnie, I agree. I think because it's such a mini train, it didn't have that WOW factor that super long trains have. Nor did I need or envision myself with a train. If the under bustle is going to be a ton of money at a private seamstress, I will most likely cut it. Alterations at DB I have heard are awful. She quoted me about $500 for alterations and the dress was $400!

I'm team "trim it so it still has a train that you don't have to bustle"

bustles are awesome- but can go wrong (not that you'll care the day of) but happens a lot - I personally really like a small train- I think it really makes gowns really something special. even the most simple sheath dresses with a tiny puddle train looks so fantastic to me.

I didn't even realize my dress had a mini train when I bought it. DB is very expensive when it comes to alterations. I still went with DB because I didn't want to risk the dress getting messed up in the process elsewhere. My material is different than yours but a bustle worked for me. I think it will be 11-12 points. Here are some pics from my 2nd alterations appointment. The 1st pic you can see some of the train and the 2nd pic is how it is going to look bustled.

This is also my dress (isn't it amazing!)! Please let me know what you decide to do because I cannot picture the dress with a bustle. Mine is supposed to come in within a few months.

@Suya, I love that bustle! that's the kind I wanted! She told me it would be AT LEAST 15 point. My material is Faille, which I'm sure is a lot heavier than tulle. How much did they charge you per point?

@FutureMrsHill, yay! Dress twins! I am so in love with that dress. The pleats are so awesome and a bustle just looked STUPID with it! I am probably not going to a seamstress for a few months still. I am in the process of losing weigh and DB said you can always exchange dress for a smaller size so I'm hoping I'll get to do that =)

Do you have an attachment to a train? If not, I'd cut it
