Custom Size Wedding Dress 2-3 weeks before wedding

Katie, on March 1, 2020 at 3:49 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6
I found a dress that I really liked. However my wedding is in 3 months. I can either 1) buy the sample off the rack and alter it or 2) order a new one custom to my size and height.

The sample is new and they are only giving 10% discount so the cost between that and a new dress is about the same. The sample is about 2 sizes bigger and I’ll have to hem the bottom, which will take time and cost some money to alter. I can also buy a new dress custom to my size and height, but it will arrive 2-3 weeks before my wedding. Is that cutting it too close? I’m thinking that if it’s custom made then I will only need very minor alterations and end up saving money that way.
Any thoughts about what I should do?

If your main motivation is because you think it will save money in alterations then I would do the sample. Unless this store does something different most dresses that are “custom made” are just a new dress ordered in your size. It’s not fit to your exact measurements and many people have different size bust vs hips so they’ll need to have it altered one way or another.

I agree with Kelly. The other thing to keep in mind is that even if the dress is fully custom, if you end up needing any alterations 2-3 weeks before your wedding, you’ll likely pay a hefty rush fee on the alterations.

Things change in three months, so you'll probably need alterations anyway. I would take the sample and do the alterations to avoid the anxiety of waiting on it and then doing rish alterations.

I agree with everyone for the exact reasons. Take the sample and see if they'll negotiate a little more on the discount, it never hurts to ask you may be surprised. But waiting until 2-3 weeks before your wedding to even get the dress sounds like an anxiety attack waiting to happen.

I agree with others about going ahead and buying the sample. I don't know where a newly manufactured dress would be coming from, but if there is any chance that it might be held up by either production or travel issues, depending on the country of origin, I think that's just an unneeded stress. Yes, your sample will need alterations, but like pps said, it is quite likely a new dress will as well. Better to have time to do some comparison shopping and get started on the alterations, rather than paying extra for a rush order. Good luck!

    Hi Katie,
I agree with all the other ladies, buying the sample is the best way to go, you'll have your alterations done on time, if you ordered, and it was coming from China, you likely wouldn't have it in time, my dress was supposedly going to need just a minor alteration, it was supposed to come with padded sewn in cups, it didn't, so don't count on your dress being custom made for you!
