Custom dress mess

Hi there, I order a custom dress from a bridal dress maker in November. I gave her a few examples of what I liked, met in person to be measured and paid $2000. It is supposed to be a custom black crepe bodysuit and a dark blue tulle skirt. The design presentation she gave me detailed the construction of both pieces and the color swatch of both pieces that I picked out. She sent me progress pictures of the dress and when I saw it I was so disappointed, I cried. I contacted them and told them the color of the skirt is not the same as a the swatch I picked out from what they presented me. They said they can tried a few different things to tone down the brightness of the skirt but the skirt may need to be remade, which will cost me more money. Im attaching 4 pics. The first two are the examples of what I wanted, the blue dress is the color I wanted for the skirt, the white dress is an example of the style of dress I wanted, black long sleeve bodysuit with a dark blue full skirt. The third pics is the color swatch in the design presentation. The last pic is the progress photo. I can’t afford to pay for another skirt to be made and I don’t know what to do. I’m debating just calling it a loss, like use the black bodysuit and then buy a skirt from Etsy or something, which will still run me about $300. I also let them know I wanted the skirt to be fuller and while the design presentation said A line, I realize that that is my fault because I should let them know I wanted fuller skirt, not A line. I can deal with the having the skirt be A line but the color is NOT ok with me at all. I am not an assertive person and Im hoping for some advice on what I should do or possible what to say or how to say it. I’m having major regrets about this whole mess and just wish I would went with something that was already designed, also kicking myself for paying $2000 for something so plain and NOT what I wanted. Thanks so much!!Custom dress mess 1

I'm sorry this is happening and I can definitely tell why you are disappointed as that so far looks like nothing like what you asked for.

Thank you kindly. I talked to the dress designer and she did say she can tell the color of the skirt is not the same as in the design presentation. That’s a good start to remedying it. She said she going to talk to the owner of the shop and see what she can do to fix it without costing me more money or at least not the amount it would cost for a whole new skirt while also not costing the shop a lot of money for more material. My idea was to layer black tulle on top to tone down the brightness of the blue while also adding some more shape to it. She also recognized that the design presentation was based on a a fuller skirt too. If worst comes to worst, I’ll go with an Etsy skirt and at least use the bodysuit because I can also wear a cardigan if I don’t like the look of it. While the idea of spending that much money on something that is not what I wanted and end up not using makes me nauseous, at least I have a back up plan. Trying to remember that while I do want to look and feel my best, I’m still getting married, and everything will be ok. Whew. I feel a bit better now.

HI there. I'm sorry you're experiencing this. That style in your inspiration pic is called horse hair trim. Perhaps instead of custom, you can find a teal- colored horse hair skirt on Amazon or other fashion outfitter that allows returns.

Hi there, I wanted to give an update on this dress situation I posted about awhile few weeks ago. The dress maker said they can add crinoline between the layers of fabric and then a layer of black tulle over the blue to tone down the brightness of this blue, all without charging me more money. I asked if the outer layer of black tulle, a single layer of it, will be enough to get the skirt to be the color of the swatch. She said no, the only way to get the skirt to be the layer of the swatch, would be to remake the skirt completely, which will cost. I’m being open- minded but still not pleased. The swatch was their’s, it was provided by them, not by me sourcing it and giving it to them. The swatch is within the design brief, the $2000 I paid was based on the design brief. I will be asking for $1000 refund. The bodysuit, while I don’t like it, was made in line with the design brief, so I can’t really complain about that. I bought a $50 white tulle skirt from David’s bridal and I love it. So luckily the issue of what I’m going to wear is settled, but I’m hopeful they will be receptive to a partial refund since they deviated so far from the design brief. On that note, thanks again for the support, ladies!!

Happy you’ve found a skirt you love. Most wedding dresses at David’s Bridal are expensive, $50 is an amazing price!
