Custom Cake - NJ - HELP

Lillian, on September 14, 2013 at 9:05 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 18

I've decided that I want to suprise FH with a grooms cake. I want the grooms cake to be his motorcycle. He loves his bike probably more than me lol. The difficult part is I have not been able to find a baker to do it. Does anyone know of any good bakers that do custom cakes in Jersey????

I don't recommend Carlos Bakery. I've had custom cakes from there several times and while they are nicely done, they taste absolutely HORRIBLE. I do second Pink Cake Box in Denville or Blue Sheep Bake Shop in Green Brook.

I've never been to carlos myself, but what tastes so bad about the cakes? is it that they are fondant or is it the cake itself? just wondering, not the first time I've heard it.

sorry, I was just kidding based on that everyone knows carlos now because of the show. Smiley smile

I have had cakes from their bakery on five separate occasions. All of them were EXTREMELY dry, one even had a gritty texture and another had buttercream that was clearly made with shortening as opposed to butter, it was super greasy and heavy.

Fondant can taste good, it depends on how its made. I've actually never eaten the fondant from their shop so I can't critique it unfortunately.

I can be harsh because I'm a baker (in the process of legalizing my business, I don't own either of the locations I previously recommended), but I rather go to Shop Rite for their cakes over Carlos'.

I've had carlos bakery cakes before and not a fan. I had cakes before and after the show and still not a fan. Yes they make fabulous cakes but they r super expensive as well.

Unfortunately. The work I have seen in person has always been very nice, but the taste just ruins it.

Carlos' is perfect for the customer who is all about looks. I've met customers who just want a specific design for the look and care nothing about the actual cake, which is the only time I would recommend their bakery lol.

La Promenade in Tenafly, NJ. I'm also surprising hubby with a grooms cake. He's a Trekkie and it's a Star Trek cake. I ordered it on Saturday. Ask for Julian and tell him Nadine who ordered the Star Trek cake referred you.

Palermos is doing our wedding cake, because the hall requires us to use them. ive never had their cake but hear great things. If you dont mind traveling a bit I always use Jackie Cakes on Staten Island for custom cakes. The cakes are delicious and she will do a tasting too.

What about Calandra's in Fairfield or Newark?

Yes, they're a bigger bakery but I don't think we've ever gotten a bad baked good from them.
