Cupcake Table - Is it necessary for lables?

Kat, on August 7, 2012 at 3:43 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 23

We are doing cupcakes rather than a cake. Below is my inspiration pic. FSIL is making our cupcakes and a small cake for FH and I to cut.

We're going to have 2 cupcake flavors:

Brown butter pumpkin cupcake with cinnamon cream cheese frosting

Better than sex chocolate cupcakes with a nutella buttercream

So here's my question - is it necessary to have something on the table identifying the flavors? I'm not sure if someone will be serving the cupcakes to our guests or if they'll just be free to go up and get one when they want it. The one wedding I went to that had cupcakes, we just helped ourselves. Our venue cost includes cake cutting so I assume that means they'd serve them for us if we want since they'd be serving cake if there was one to cut. I imagine if someone is serving them, they'd know what the flavors are and therefore could let guests know? Do guests even usually get to choose what flavor cake they get?? I never eat cake at weddings so I have no idea!

From what I've seen at weddings, the cake is sort of just put down in front of you and you get what you get - unless you specifically ask for a flavor. Should I just ask my venue how they handle cupcakes? If they're going to be served, I won't have to worry about a label, sign, etc. with the flavors. Not that I have any problem making a sign...it's just one more thing to do that I hadn't really thought of.

Yes as long as the people serving them know which flavors there are you shouldn't have to label them...Also looks cuter wo labels..

That's completely up to you...if you want guests to be free to go up and grab their own cupcake (which is what most people do when they have cupcakes) you might want to have a little sign telling which side has which flavor...b/c some people may not like pumpkin...and some may not like chocolate Smiley smile

I'm going to make labels for the simple fact that we are doing a casual thing and I don't want someone with a food allergy to pick one they shouldn't have.

I am having 4 flavors for mine. i plan on having a little place card like the name cards for guests that say what each flavor is. Nothing huge. Just a little card.

Cydney - that's what I was thinking. Most people like chocolate I think but I know pumpkin isn't everyone's favorite.

So with a cupcake table - would it be easier to plan on having guests serve themeselves? If so, do I need to ask the venue to put plates out on the table too? And if I don't want plates out...would it then be best for them to be served by someone? LOL I have so many questions that just popped into my head. I hadn't even thought about any of this!

I'd do labels just in case of allergies. Especially with the Nutella.

I don't think it's necessary. But the sign could be really cute and part of the decor.

I framed two chocolate wrappers for candies that were on our dessert bar, it wasn't really necessary but I thought it was cute. Smiley smile

Kris - that's kind of what I was thinking of doing, actually. I think it would be cute to get a little frame like that and just print something up with the cupcake names/flavors on them. Now to go search for a frame...

TJ Maxx has such cute designer-style frames and housewares for cheap, I can't walk in there unattended. Smiley smile

Walmart has really great, simple, super cheap ones too. Like, $1. I got a crapton of our wedding stuff from Walmart!

As someone with allergies, please do signs! It someone has a nut allergy it could be sucky if they ate it! And you want your wedding to be happy/fun for everyone. Not sickly/icky/gross or possible ER trip

Kat ... the way I've seen it is that most guests go and grab a cupcake themselves and there are cocktail napkins to grab. I think it's really a personal choice. If I were in your shoes, I'd just put out some napkins with little signs for guests to know which is which and let them have at it...that's what I did with our dessert table (though we had 5 different kinds of desserts)

I had 17 different flavors of mini cupcakes so signs were definitely necessary in my case. My bakery actually made up the signs. Our guests just went up and served themselves. I would make signs in your case with Nutella being an ingredient. Some people may be allergic to that.

Oooh, good to know. Thanks! I never, ever, ever think to look for stuff like that at TJ Maxx - in my mind they just have clothes. I really try to avoid WalMart at all costs but if I don't find anything anywhere else, I'll check them out. Smiley smile Thanks for the suggestions!

    Oh, I missed the Nutella.

Then yeah, I'd do signs in case of a nut allergy. Or at least find out ahead of time if someone has a nut allergy and give them a heads up.

Ultimately it's up to you but what came to my mind is what if someone is allegeric to something in one of the flavors (ex: cinnamon)..This is one reason I can think to label it if someone is not there to let the guest know. Just a thought...

OK - thank you all for your input and suggestions! I will definitely do a sign - I had thought of the Nutella/allergy factor, which is why I started considering doing a sign in the first place.

OK last question - if I want to have cocktail napkins on the table for guests to grab with their cupcakes...is that something I provide and bring to the venue? I assume so - and maybe I need to check with the venue. Just thought I'd see if anyone knew!

Is your venue acting as your caterer? Most caterers will provide cocktail napkins

You can ask your caterer/venue. I thought we might have to provide them but it turned out our caterer and bartending service both brought them, so I'm glad I didn't bring any. One less thing to remember. Smiley smile

Yes our catering is through our venue so we'll probably be good. I will just add that to my list of things to double check with the venue when we have our final meeting.

Thanks for your help ladies!! Smiley smile
