Cultural appropriation or no?

Sarah, on June 23, 2018 at 7:03 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 27
This may seem like a silly question but I try my best to stick to my own culture and not try to “steal” anyone else’s and I don’t want to offend anyone by my attire. I’ve tried looking online for my answer but all I can find is responses about tikka headpieces and I don’t know the difference. I love these headpieces and would love to get one for the wedding but I don’t know if it falls under the category of what I’m trying to avoid. So, is this headpiece appropriate or should I just get a flower crown?

Asked my FH about this since he’s a pretty intelligent fellow when it comes to political/cultural matters. He said if it’s something that a certain culture wears during a wedding, and you are not a part of that culture or marrying someone from that culture, you should avoid it, and I’m inclined to agree. It’s a beautiful piece, but yeah to be safe I would probably go with a flower crown instead. I completely understand where you’re coming from because I always want to avoid appropriating culture, too.

What if it looks like this? I’m not even sure what makes a headpiece a tikka which is why I’m confused on what is appropriate and what is appropriation

Wedding headpieces/headresses have been worn by almost every culture. I'm Russian, Portugese, Scottish, Irish and they all have headpieces some of which look very similar to the second picture you posted.

It’s so hard for me to tell the difference too, honestly. This one reminds me more of a Grecian inspired headpiece, it’s lovely!

As someone who has watched my culture being taken for peoples trendy weddings a lot lately I just am really grateful you're doing your research.

I think it would be a better idea to go with a flower crown.

I think if you love it you should wear it, flower crowns are called haku's in hawaii and they are worn on special occasions such as weddings but in still wearing one.

It’s something that is not specific to one culture, and is actually used in multiple cultures... so I’m inclined to say go for it.

This one would be good - its very similar to the circlets worn all across Europe in the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The one on the top is closer to a tikka from what I've seen from High School friends who happen to be Indian. They have the single gem in the center and the chain going through the part and the ones along the sides of the head.

If you really want a jeweled headpiece I would go for the second one because it is much more universal and if anything is historically inspired instead of taking from a modern culture.

That looks very 1920’s in my opinion, you know those delicate headpieces some women wore then? Maybe you can find something like that and it won’t be cultural at all.

While it is beautiful, if you're looking to avoid cultural appropriation, I think the flower crown is going to be the best route. This is similar to a Desi bridal headpiece.

I would be careful. I know I have heard that people get upset with all the henna tattoos. That a tradition in there culture is becoming a thing of fashion.

I’m in the camp where if it’s meant to honor a culture and isn’t meant to make fun of it, go for it.

Everything is going to offend someone.
You're not doing anything disrespectful. It's a beautiful head piece. As long as it won't be disrespectful or offensive to someone who will actually be at your wedding, I say go for it.

If you like it, get it. Everything is so damn politically sensitive these days.
