Cricut, Worth the Money?

Heather, on October 11, 2018 at 6:07 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 10
I’m sure I’m not the first or last one to inquire, but for those of you that have the cricut is it worth it?

I’m a graphic designer so naturally this intrigues me but my concern is my creativity is more than this machine can handle 🤣

So for those of you that have one:
- Which version do you recommend?
- What are your frustrations (if any) with it?
- What are it’s best features?
- If your a designer, do you feel like this lives up to expectations?

Inital usage would be for wedding diys but I have many ideas I’d love to try.

I live my Cricut, but I'm not creative at all so it can most definitely handle my lack of creativity lol. I use the Explore Air 2, but they have a Cricut Maker out now that would probably be better for you. They're pretty pricey, but if you plan on using it a lot, totally worth it.

Oh, and my frustration was just getting my designs set so they cut the way I want them to. But that's just the learning curve! And like I said, zero creativity so obviously I'm not a designer, but I've been pretty successful making things for the holidays and the wedding.

    Hello Heather!

I just recently invested in a Cricut Explore Air 2 to help make my Christmas cards this year! I just received it a couple of days ago so I'm still going the set-up process, but I'm excited to get started!

I've read a lot of other community members who mention how awesome their Cricut is! I'm not sure how restricting it would be for you as a graphic designer, but for DIYing wedding projects, it sounds like it's awesome!

I actually just found this really helpful discussion from another community member who asked the same thing: Is a cricut worth it?

I absolutely love my Cricut Maker. I am not very crafty but with all the different sites like creativefabrica.com, Cricut access, auntietay.com, and Melody Lane, 3D SVG, Dreaming Tree, etc. etc. you do not need to be crafty...they do it for you. I have made cards, t-shirts, dresses, cover for my Cricut Maker, paper flowers, decorations for my kids birthday party, stencils for doing glass etching...I could go on and on.

I plan on using it to make my invitations, thank you cards, and save the date cards. I also plan to make some of the decorations (signs, flowers, toasting glasses, bridal party items, etc) for my wedding, bridal shower, and whatnot.

I personally have the Cricut Maker. It is the best way to go since it can keep evolving with new additions. For example, I am able to use the Knife Blade which the other ones cannot as far as I am aware. I like all the different mediums I am able to use. The only thing that frustrates me is the fact you have to have an internet connection to use Design Space, and so on. They used to have a stand-alone program and from what I understand they are talking about creating a replacement stand-alone program.

I tried the Silhouette and the Brother but I personally did not like them.

I’m planning to get both the Cricut Air 2 and the Cuttlebug. I figured out that making my own invitations alone will pay for it (since the ones I want are really expensive, of course). I plan to make my invitations & enclosures. Save the dates, thank you cards, menus, escort cards, table numbers, many other signs, cake topper, personalized napkins, popcorn boxes, favor tags, etc. I may get the Maker instead of the Air 2. Still deciding. You can find lots of great templates on Etsy.

    YES YES YES!!!

I initially brought the cricut explore 2 because I wanted wooden table numbers which were $10 a piece on Etsy so I figured if I made them myself, the $200 machine would pay for itself. I made the wooden table numbers alright but I also made so so so so much more and saved over $1,000 compared to what I would've purchased on Etsy.

Table numbers, welcome/ceremony/bar/gift table signs, personalizing literally everything (robes, PJs, champagne flutes, hangers, etc.), addressing envelopes (yes the cricut can write). I will say that all this stuff takes a while so it's only worth it if you have the time to dedicate to all this crafting. I didn't really see a reason in paying for the Maker because I wasn't planning on cutting heavy materials like leather or wood. The cricut can pretty much do ANYTHING as long as you put in the time.

I'm planning to make much more and will post a comprehensive list of all the Cricut things I make for the wedding but here are some.

I just bought a Cricut Maker (got it half price on a GMA deal, woo hoo!) & plan to use it to make all my wedding stationary & signs, cake topper, Mr & Mrs cut outs for head table...

I can’t wait to get to work with it!

I just got a Cricut Explore Air 2 for Christmas and I'm super lost! However, I think it will save me a TON of money in the end. The design studio is great and there are soo many endless possibilities.

Hi Elisa, thanks so much for posting all your wedding cricut creations! I'm getting married next summer and I'm getting ready to purchase the Explore Air 2 in hopes of using it to make lots of wedding items! You mentioned in your post that you were planning on posting a comprehensive list of all the Cricut things I make for the wedding, have you made that post? If so, do you have a link to it? Thank you!
