Credit Cards and Weddings

NM&GD, on November 13, 2019 at 9:18 AM Posted in Planning 0 8
Credit Cards and Weddings: So, I am having thoughts of getting a credit card (no I do not have one as of yet) as well as saving up $500 a month + my fiance adding $500 a month, but when I go through and calculate up to that date we are planning to get married it covers about half. Should I get a credit card to build points, credit, and pay for certain aspects of the weddings OR should I do somethings out of pocket vs what I save? What has worked for others for past budgeting.

I wouldn’t spend more than you can save before the wedding. Going into debt for a one day event isn’t a good way to start your marriage. If you want to get a credit card for points I think it’s ok to get one but keep in mind that credit cards charge interest (most of them at a pretty high %) if you don’t pay your balances off.

I had to use credit cards to book locations. I refused to take money out of my savings. With that said, we are paying it l off in massive chunks and also got a large amount of flight points! We got a delta card and the initial deal was like 60k points which can you some great flights! We used that for our destination wedding but by the time we get to take a honeymoon, we will have it built back up.

I wouldn't tell you to go into debt, but if you can handle your finances and not go crazy...then they can actually be financially beneficial.

I wouldn't spend more than you are able to save. There's no reason to dig yourself into a hole over a wedding. I would, however, recommend getting a travel point card. We got one recently that has an intro bonus if you spend more than $4000 in the first three months. We've charged all wedding expenses to it (that we can immediately pay off) and have racked up enough points to pay for the flight for out honeymoon. There are smart ways to use a credit card if you can be disciplined enough to not get too crazy with it! Also, if you've never had a credit card before, chances are your credit limit won't be too high.

I would not recommend the use of credit cards, but if you have to, you have to.

Do your research, there are a good handful of Credit cards that will offer 0% interest for 12 months or so, or some where you earn points on travel and purchases, but there could be an annual charge sometimes. If you opt for one with a 0% interest, obviously hold off getting it for as long as you can, so you can milk that 0% interest. But DEFINITELY research the different companies and cards out there. There are some good ones, and not so good ones.

You should definitely get a credit card to start building a credit history, but treat it like a debit card. Don't ever put more on there than you can pay off in full each month. But if you start using a credit card for everyday purchases and for wedding expenditures (and again, pay it off in FULL each month), then you can start accumulating points that you can use towards your honeymoon!

As far as specific card ideas go - right now I have a Bank of America credit card that lets you pick a category to get 3% cash back in, a Discover credit card with 5% cash back on rotating categories each quarter, and a few travel credit cards for the airlines I fly the most. My FH loves his Citi double-cash card as well, so that could be one to consider.

I got an amazon prime card before the wedding. It is nice for the holidays because you get 5% rewards/cash back on amazon purchases and you can use your rewards to buy things on amazon. I got a lot of my decor with my rewards so basically free.

I will echo the don't go into debt for a wedding thing but your finances are your business. Life happens and sometimes you need to rely on a credit card in an emergency.

FH and I have put nearly all wedding expenses we can on my Bank of America cash back card. We also use it for our every day expenses. With that said, we also ensure that it is completely paid off every month in order to not be charged the interest. We love the cash back we get from it. I've always been a fan of credit cards, I got one the moment I turned 18 and could. But not once have I missed a payment. For our budget though, we are saving everything we plan on spending. I have a formula in our budget spreadsheet that calculates exactly what we need to save each month to reach our total for our wedding and honeymoon.

That's tricky. On one hand I completely see the validity of putting it on a card and paying it off but on the other hand I do agree with PPs saying go with what's in your means.
