Creating new last name

Hello ladies!!
My fiance and I have been thinking alot lately. He has disowned his family and doesn't feel like he wants a connection to his father anymore so he wants to change his last name. The idea of taking my last name came up, but I have no attachment to my last name either because the lineage of my last name doesn't go that far because we do not have relations with that side of my family. Therefore neither my fiance or I have any reason to want to keep our last names.

Is it hard to create a whole new last name in the state of Michigan? Any one done this before? Any ideas on a new last name beginning with the letter be that mean brave, courage, strength..

    Hey there Heather!! I like how you guys are really cleaning the slate and want to start your marriage with a new name that just yours. Smiley smile

    I've done some research and it looks like changing your last name is doable, but there's a lot of paperwork and time and possibly money involved. If you and your fiance are planning on going on your honeymoon shortly after your wedding, I would start the whole process once you get back. If you're not, it looks like the first steps might be for both of you to get a criminal background check and file a name change petition.

    I think some of the best advice anyone could give you right now would be to talk to a lawyer. Researching can only tell you so much, but a lawyer or a judge could give you the right information, or at least send you on the right track. Smiley smile Best of luck with this endeavor!!!

    I'm not really sure how it works in Michigan, but I know someone I went to high school with recently got married and they created a new last name! They took the first half of her last name and the last half of his last name and combined them so they have a totally new name. I just thought it was a cool idea and super unique. I don't know the process they went through to do this, however. Hopefully it isn't super complicated for you!
