CraigsList Photography

Jillian, on November 8, 2013 at 10:30 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 24

For anyone who doesn't have a large photography budget....

I put out an ad on CraigsList at 8:45 this morning for a budget friendly photographer.

I've had 6 responses since then and 2 of them are amazing!

I was pretty blunt in the ad and told them exactly what I wanted for a certain price. Told them to not contact me if they couldn't do it for what I wanted. Guess it pays to just be blunt and honest and let them come to you!

Don't be scared of using the Craig!

That's how one of my best friends found hers and her photos turned out BEAUTIFUL! The photographer used her wedding photos on her website since it was the first one she had ever shot, and she has since booked 8 more weddings!!!

That's awesome! I'm always hesitant about CL but I figure someone I randomly find on any other website is pretty much the same concept.

You should! I'm kind of a "no-bullshit" person when it comes to this wedding because I don't have a large budget. I just told them to not bother e-mailing me if they have no wedding galleries to show me. Hopefully it helps filter out the bad ones.

My photographer had posted an ad in Craigslist, which is how I found her. She's just an independent photographer looking for business and was WAY cheaper than anyone that I had come across before. So far so good.

I also found the vases for my centerpieces and my wedding dress on craigslist. Never really used Craigslist much before this but for my wedding it has been a huge money saver!

We found our photographer on Craigslist. It had a link to his site, so we were also able to see weddings he had done. And when we met with him, he showed us an album from a prior wedding. But at the time, he had recently left a large firm, and was just starting to build up his own business, so we got a very reasonable price. He would now charge a lot more.

I found my job on CL so figured why not try and find a photographer there too? lol

This was after visiting every website for Vegas vendors from the search tool on weddingwire and other sites.

I contacted her throught CL, visited her website ans her FB page. She is way cheaper and her work is great!

That's how the drive thru wedding corporate chains find photographers and people think they're getting a great deal too. Like David's Bridal, etc. I could hire a licensed plumber or have the guys in a truck at the Home Depot parking lot come fix my leaking pipe behind the wall....a few might be accountable as well as be qualified to do the job, a bunch will just be monkeys. Same with photographers. I hope you find someone with the accountability to match, many people seem to forget that they aren't just hiring someone to press a button. Personality and accountability / project management are huge parts of the job too, that the low budget demands aren't played with those capable.

Jay, I agree with you. But living is starting to cost too much for those of us who are upper lower class, and lower middle class. So when vendors can't offer their work to meet a variety of brides, we are forced to take chances.

Vendors need to understand something-we know what your time is worth. Don't think we don't! But here's the thing-if a vendor ACTS like they can't work with me, I'm NOT going to want to work with them.

And this whole "a wedding is more work", seriously makes me question using vendors for anything. Bc in my life, EVERYTHING is important, and no day is more special than the last. Why? Bc I'm alive and I made it.

Vendors need to be more humble, and realize they started out on the ground level, too. So catering to ONLY high budgets, is bs.

Btw-technically qualified or not, I've had BETTER work from them guys at Home Depot, than I have using the yellow pages. Sometimes, dedication to a job, rules out experience. I'm in health care, and my boss hired me based on my attitude, and my empathy towards patients, against the fact I hadn't worked in 6 years. Bc everyone she's hired with high end experience, ends up totally sucking, and dragging the rest of us down, bc they think they are better. Attitude is more important, along with dedication!

I feel it too Cheetah, we're all in this mess together. I'm a person like you, not a vendor, you can't put a dollar in me and I spit out a coke. LOL. And I also agree that it's a personal experience, I'd never suggest being disrespected by a vendor / service provider anywhere you spend your hard earned money.

I agree with everything you're saying here. But too many lose sight of all quality and common sense when blinded by low price. You have to remember, I get those phone calls and emails that say "Joe Blow photographer with no contract bailed on me and my deposit money" or my wedding photos are so dark, can you Photoshop them for me?

I'm not even at the top price tier myself and will work with someone however I can especially if we are a great fit, which otherwise why work with them at all? I love each client and give them the best and make sure they're happy. They don't have to take out a second mortgage to hire me but I can't offer what I offer for what the CL people charge.
