Covid19 Canceled My Wedding

Alisha, on March 24, 2020 at 10:11 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 9

My wedding was supposed to be April 17th and I was informed by my Venue that the were not going to host my event and on top of the stress of that, they are attempting to keep all of the money that we gave them for the venue. I'm heartbroken and lost. I cannot afford to lose 8000 dollars, especially right now. If anyone has a venue or somewhere that can host a fall wedding instead of a spring one, please drop me a line

Did your venue give you the option of postponing?

I would read over your contract very carefully.

It doesn't make sense to me that they would be cancelling your event completely and trying to keep your money, instead of working with you to find another date that suits you.

Yes, but they only had about 5 dates available and all of them were in the summer. I didn't want a summer wedding because I'm in Texas. I asked if there were any fall dates and was stonewalled. I wanted to get a refund in order to re-plan, but they are being very difficult. I was booked at Noah's event venue before and that went sour when they went out of business in February.

I even asked if next year was available and was told no.

Absolutely look at your contract, keep a record of all communications with them, and keep talking with them.

Can you be flexible about the day of the week?

I'm so sorry this is such a problem.

I've kept up with all the emails and stuff and I am pretty flexible. The problem is getting them to agree to the refund. They aren't being flexible at all about the dates that want to offer so I'm not interested in what they are offering.

I would insist a refund it's impossible they don't have another date even next year if you are being responsible around planning. I would definitely look into my contract and even the Better business bureau or local legal aid for help with this matter. 8000 during these times is hard to lose!

I can see them keeping the initial non refundable deposit if that's in the contract, but 8,000 would be nuts, have you considered a Thursday or sunday? they cant have every day in the fall booked

To be honest, you may need to take legal action to get the money back and since they canceled the contract, I'm not sure you'd still to be held to the terms. That said, canceling is the right thing. Forcing you to take something of lesser value (summer date in hot state is lesser value) is not the right thing.

If they keep stonewalling you (not allowing to reschedule to a comparable date) and you are absolutely certain you want to burn the bridge, I would be loud and leave at least one negative review on every possible outlet (yelp, all wedding sites, social media accounts (tag them)) and not stop or take down the reviews until they do the right thing. Make sure stealing your money costs them more than 8,000 in sales.

It's not a good look or business practice to screw brides out of money during this time.
