Covid

I have been unable to get in contact with the pastor that we initially hired. We were to fly to Jamaica on March 19th but unable to do so due to Covid 19. We are no longer getting married in Jamaica. I would like to get my deposit back. What should I do?

It was all through this app, I believe it was just a deposit only. I’ll have to go back and review. He hasn’t even responded at all yet.

Depending on if you signed a contract or not you may not get a deposit back. It stinks because nobody could have imagined COVID hitting like this so hopefully they'll be willing to return it.

Most deposits are non refundable (at least where I’m from). If there’s no contract signed he doesn’t really have a legal obligation to send back the deposit unless you go to court.

I wish I would of had the experience or knowledge about the need for a contract. I would think he would be understanding due to international flights and resorts shut down that it was out of my control.

Unless your contract specifies that the deposit is refundable, which is rare, he's not obligated to give you your money back.

I had a friend get married and a vendor bailed last minute because they didn’t have a contract. My friend won is small claims court though. Depending on how much the deposit was will determine if it’s worth you looking into going to court or not.

That sucks! I feel your pain! My wedding is scheduled in Jamaica. What I have learned about Jamaica and the impact on their economy from covid, is they have no money left. Long story short, I almost cancelled at my venue, their policy is a 50% refund. I was told, “yes we stand by the refund policy, but there is no money to refund” “”all refunds are postponed until further notice.” The economy has been hurt so bad that even if my contract states refunds, I wouldn’t get anything for a long time. I’m so sorry you are in this situation and I really hope you get the deposit back. All my deposits are non refundable for the makeup, photographer, DJ ect. It’s only the venue that has a refund policy, which again doesn’t matter right now anyway.

The deposit secures and holds the date, and the vendor sets aside their time to be at your wedding. So usually a deposit is nonrefundable, if you’re canceling. However if you were just postponing, the deposit could possibly be transferred to the new date. But if they’re out of the country and a small vendor, you’re probably out of luck with getting your money back.
