Covid Wedding: How do i keep my dress clean enough to wear twice?

Kari, on April 19, 2020 at 7:39 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 2 7

Our wedding plans are being affected by Covid-19, so we are brainstorming options. In the event that we decide to elope (legal ceremony) and then have a full wedding and reception later, does anyone have any advice about wearing my wedding dress twice? I have a beautiful fit and flare wedding dress with a long train that I really want to wear at some point, but I'm worried if I wear it for our legal ceremony that it will get dirty or damaged before our big event with our friends and family. Do you think dry cleaning would be sufficient to clean it between our elopement and wedding?

I also like the idea of having two dresses so that each event is special and my fiance/husband is "wowed" by me each time, but definitely want my mom and others to see me in my actual wedding dress even if they aren't at our elopement, and I only wear it for the ceremony itself the second time around and then switch into something else for the reception.

So my wedding was at a zoo/safari park so you can imagine how dirty it would have gotten. Surprisingly, it was pretty good condition according to the preservation place I took it too. So I’m assuming if you’re just wearing it for a short while in a normal setting, it shouldn’t get too crazy and drying cleaning should be good. Just make sure to lift your dress off the ground whenever you’re walking over grass and dirt.

Where are you planning on doing the elopement? Like a courthouse? Or is it like a beach or on top of a mountain-type of elopement?

We haven't decided. We're in a Covid-19 black hole and right now we have no idea what we actually CAN do. Our planned wedding ceremony site is outdoors (on grass) and the reception is in a wedding barn with a poured concrete floor. I'm imagining that our elopement will be outdoors, either at a garden or park or some natural area, although its possible we'd do it at a courthouse but then I'd probably want some outdoor photos too, but that would be a more urban setting. We're outdoor people, so a nature inspired outdoor setting would be our pick, but I guess it depends on weather and coordinating the people we want involved. Either way I definitely don't imagine it being entirely indoors.

Thanks for the feedback about your wedding. It feels better knowing other brides have done outdoor weddings and not had their dress totally trashed after.

I think yes, why not? You should carefully wear your dress and place it in a clean place. If you're so worried you may clean your house with an emop.co.uk cleaning service (if you’re in London, otherwise check your local services). I made my comment for other people who cares about the same thing.

We had an outdoor ceremony on our original date. The ceremony was on grass then we went to the beach (dry sand areas only) for photos and the dress looked the same at the end of the day as it did when I put it on. My mom was very worried I would ruin the dress since I plan to wear it again next year for the postponed wedding but I wanted to enjoy my wedding day in my wedding dress and it worked out fine. I wore my very long veil too which came out unharmed. If the dress does happen to get dirty or torn, the cleaners should be able to fix it. My big recommendation, especially for an outdoor wedding, is to take out the dress that night or the next morning and inspect EVERY layer for bugs or twigs that might have gotten caught up in the fabric. It'll save you a lot of worry over the next year and you can get a good sense of any potential damage.

One of my silver linings when we had to postpone was that I get to wear my beautiful dress twice. I'm so glad I wore it the first time around and I can't wait to wear it again. I hope you all find the option that works best for you!

Thanks for the detailed post. I hope it helps another bride! I ended up wearing my dress for a couple hours for our mini ceremony and had it on dirt trails and in grass with no issues. I did get a lot of leaves, sticks, and bramble (and one caterpillar) stuck in the lace from the trail but it took maybe 45 minutes to pick everything out and then it looked as good as new. I’m hoping we can have our big event next year and I get to wear it again then!
