Covid Wedding Change of Plans; Need New Venue

Crystal, on September 11, 2020 at 12:32 PM Posted in California Planning 0 5

We are getting married on November 21, 2020. It was planned and scheduled to take place at a super remote location in Julian, CA (San Diego County) but as you all know... COVID. On August 8, we had our walk through with the venue and were told "yea you can still have your wedding just comply with social distancing advice" a month later, September 9 we were basically told "just kidding, you can only have a ceremony on our property and will not get any sort of refund or appeasement. You only other option we can provide is a complete postponement and we must know by October 21 so that we can rent the rooms for lodging."

Now here we are scrambling trying to figure out a way to have a mini-mony of just our immediate families but obvious we will still want to celebrate a bit after. Does any one have ideas on where we could have our celebration preferably in San Diego county because all our vendors are from here.

We have considered our families houses which would be perfect but our families are from Los Angeles County and Arizona.

I'm sorry you are having to deal with this. I'm from northern Ca and don't know much about Southern Ca, but I hope you are able to find something!

Sorry you're going through this! I'm in San Diego as well and trying to move our spring wedding to a smaller setting, but the venue we're looking at isn't formally taking bookings right now due to the restrictions in place. Do you know if any of the county parks are issuing permits again?

    Hi Haleigh,

Check out Heritage Park located in old town. Its a beautiful garden area. This will likely work if all you want is a ceremony space but if you are looking to hold a reception there, the restrictions ( non-covid related) are pretty stringent. I.e. your party must conclude by dusk, there is no staking in the grounds, etc. Another option we considered for ceremony only was Alcazar Garden in Balboa Park this also requires a county park permit. Lastly, there is the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park as well that is beautiful but I do not have many specifics.

I believe the county is issuing permits, but the struggle is to get a person on the phone because less people are working the county offices. Hoping this was helpful.

Hi Crystal! How many people will you have at your reception / post-ceremony celebration?

I'd try reaching out to local restaurants to see if they can accommodate a small private party!

Hi Lynnie. Thank you so much we actually got super creative and that same weekend we found a house to rent off airbnb to have a mini immediate family only wedding. I am becoming more excited again as it will really be about our two families becoming one rather than just a "party" on the day we got married. Of course it's not the way we imagined it but I think it will be beautiful. Luckily I have been quite the DIY bride so we basically own all the decor Smiley smile.
